Not 20w50!!!!!!
5w30 / 40 or 50
Something like Valvoline Synpower 5w40
Hey Guys, I have been told by all sorts of people and cant seem to get enough info to satisfy myself, which oil should I use in a TD5 that has done 180,000. LR told me any good quality 20w 50, local mech said same, LR specialist adv 15w40, other LR specialist adv 5w 30. what can I use, if this veh has pretty much been serviced by rover if i suddenly put different oil in I may upset the engine
cheers

cheers, can I ask what is the difference is in 30 40 50 and what does w stand for
W stands for winter, the first number, followed by W represents the low temperature viscosity, 5W, 10W, 15W... the lower this number, the more fluid at low temperature the oils, the easier the engine starts.
The second number gives the high temperature viscosity: 30, 40, 50. The higher this number, the more viscous the oil when hot.
The hotter the climate where you are would probably require a higher number. I used 5w30 in the Uk , but swapped to 5w40 here.
thanks mate very informative

The Penrite HPR Diesel 5 is the go. Most of the big parts chains sell the 10L packs.
Sheesh, what a bunch of Penrite groupies
Confusing oil stuff here http://www.aulro.com/afvb/good-oil/7...k130-more.html
I'll penrite up to then. HPR Diesel 5. It's priced right and it's the perfect oil for aTd5.
