No comparison!!! the Triton was hopeless...... we took it back to camp and grabbed the Disco classic I had to make it into where we were going, my sisters rav 4 was doing a better job in the dunes than the Triton and made it to our destination.
Was just using it as it is the only experience I have had with traction control in soft sand.

My Triton V10 in America was gold!!!!

No argument on the ETC, but with a 6x7 single axle un braked trailer with hurdles and 2 meters of wood on it negotiating old logging coupes up old steep skidder tracks, Its not nice when you hit the brakes to stop and the anti locks keep unlocking wheels while you try and back the trailer un-expectantly down the track until your brain kicks into gear and you pull on the handbrake. To tell you the truth I have only had this happen in my old 96 tdi dissco and when I got the D2 I thought it was good to be able to disable the anti lock brakes it's just a shame it disables ETC too. Can't really comment on sand as I haven't had the D2 on sand yet, as for the Triton, it was 6 months old at the time, we half ripped the side step off it, damaged the sil so we took it back and resumed the trip in my old 93 v8 disco.

    Cheers Roger

If other people experience is anything to go by, doesn't that mean, even when driven poorly (no offence to anyone) disengaging ETC is fool proof?

    Just my two cents.

But to get back on topic, I'll do "things" to anyone who can get me a factory, sealed, 2001 D2 CDL Linkage and Lever...

Hi, opening a 6 year old can of worms here maybe but just interested in the first post:

“but we put a little linkage underneath to engage the difflock to use in sand, however when in muddy areas this can be a horrible task getting under the car, to engage it”

I’m understanding this to mean that on a pre-04 D2 (without the CDL linkage) an alt option to buying the linkage and changing the lever is to set up a smaller mechanical change underneath the car to get out and “manually” lock the diff when needed. Is this correct?

Interesting to me as an 02 TD5 owner who prob isn’t up for investing in the linkage right now but would like to be able to use CDL in rare circumstances a few times a year for complete off road trips (eg up mt Stirling, in sand). ETC gets me where I want to go so far, but knowing I had a back up would be a boost of confidence when heading into harder stuff.

Have I got this completely wrong? If not, any tips on what this involves? Will message the author as well but not sure if they are still active on the site.

    Disco 2 CDL engagement linkage/lever

You need to determine how f you even haveCDL.
    An 02 most likely doesn’t.
As above, search is your friend.

If you have an 02 and it has eu3 engine but the old style headlights then it will not have a CDL mechanism.
You can fit the mechanism by getting either an older or newer transfer case nose. It can be fitted in situ as I have done it and there are how tos on the net. The US bloke,s one is good.

Bits from a D1 linkage will fit. Only mods needed are if donor and recipient are not the same box (auto to manual or Vickie verrcy). I've already taken the bits from my D1 donor ready to go into my (her) 1999 D2. Means pulling the centre console out, so I'll do it when I add the SLS controller and a few other bit and bobs.
A good write up is at www.discovery2.co.uk - lots of other hints and tips, too.
