    td5 auto trans oil

I have just spent about an hour searching but not finding the info required. What is te best oil for the auto trans in my disco, I had it serviced the other day and not happy with the shift and I believe it is oil related.
    cheers

    bblaze,

I wasn't sure either when I changed mine recently. I rang Davis Performance in Sydney who changed it 40k ago or so and he said that the Caltex Texamatic 1888 that I was about to put in was fine and wouldn't interfere with what was already in there. Anything that is dexron-3 or above should be fine.

I have read that when changing fluid, its best to do two changes as per Urban Panzers awesome website (www.discovery2.co.uk / Automatic Gearbox Oil and Filter Change). The shop would have only done one change which can actually dislodge muck and make the auto perform less well. Well thats what I've heard anyway....

I did mine on the weekend Dextron 3 no problems, shifting better and the auto lever is moving smoother!

    Penrite SIN ( or equivalent)

Use a synthetic, rather than a mineral based transmission oil. I've used Penrite SIN in my last three vehicles (LR D2a, Camry, Commodore) for the automatic - smoother changes, but this may have also been due to the new oil.

    Neat Refill Tip
For the LR D2a I put a hose (about 10mm OD) into the container after taking out the filler tube from the screw top. I put the hose into the fill hole of the transmission. I had also drilled a small hole into the screw top as well, just big enough for a ball inflator. Added a compressor to the ball inflator and turned the compressor on - oil comes out via the hose and into the transmission. When the flow needs to stop, pull out the ball inflator - flow stops quickly. No suction pumps with their oil drips etc. and having to move in and out from under the car to refill etc.

    Castrol Transmax Z

It's on the ZF approval list, is fully Dexron III compatible, and it's synthetic.

Around $45 for 4L when it's on special (40% off) at Supercheap. Look it up and tag the product on the Supercheap web site to "notify me when on special" .... that's how I buy all my fluids / oils ... when they're on special, not when I need them ... allways have plenty on hand, at good prices that way.

    Good philosophy

Fluids is spot on - buy when on special, not just as you need them. If the retailers offer 20% or more off a product, then that's the time to buy them (so long as the price is reasonable when on special), put them on the shelf and use them when needed. Didn't know you could tag them on the website though.... thanks for the heads up.
