Just about to do the head gasket. My Disco is a 1999 D2 TD5 - which came out with the plastic head dowels. Trawling the web and this forum it seems that your can use steel dowlels instead of plastic when refitting the head but there is a risk of cracking the head?
Is there any general consensus on this - has anyone replaced plastic with steel in a number of early D2's and had no problems?
thanks
Willis

Yes I have trawled and found most of the threads relating to heads and head gaskets etc and seen that notice.....but reading across a range of threads it seems almost everyone goes ahead and fits the steel dowels to the earlier models anyway?
thanks
Willis
I fitted them in my 2001 D90 back in 2008 and have had no issues since, and nor do I expect any.
I have fitted steel dowels to an early TD5 also.
Only done for 9 months since the last change and 12 before that, but no issues from the dowels.
I did check the lengths and diameters with a vernier and was happy there was expansion room, can't remember the figures![]()
Steel dowels are definately OK to fit, we have done LOTS over the years, no ill effects.
