There is about 10 minutes max. work involved in changing the BCU settings.
The quotes I posted are long winded descriptions of a couple of the settings that could be changed to achieve the result you want.
The short version is: You can't start the Disco because the passive immobiliser is looking for the key fob when you turn the key.
The easiest and perhaps best way to achieve what you are after is change a couple of alarm settings in the BCU. It's not necessary to use a FBH and disable the alarm altogether.
- Set "Passive Immobiliser" to disabled: this stops the alarm system checking for the key fob, and the BCU will always send the correct code to the TD5 EMS, allowing you to start the engine.
- Set "Perimetric Alarm" to "Always disarm with key"
- Set "Volumetric Alarm" to "Always disarm with key"
Changing three settings in the BCU should take the whole of 5-10 minutes from go to whoa. $250 for that amount of work sounds like typical diagnostics extortion.

sorry Andrew, i was just quoting what my locksmith had to say. I knew I would be looking further than just him to solve it. Most of any extra cash I had floating has gone into the bikes and extras for the disco. just trying to save a dollar. good thing the keys from England worked for you. I hope I have the same luck with the ducati. (I used motomatrix, they seem to have a great reputation).
and thanks off track. im a little wiser to the process now and hope the local LR guys will come to the party and do what you suggested. The other guy was going to cost me $250 and it would have cost about $80 in fuel to get there and back. I dont know what he was going to do but I'll run the 3 point process by him as well and see how I go. I think he said he was going to install a different ECM but I'm unsure of this. I'm still at the learning stage as this is all new to me.
by the way my disco is a 4.0L v8 and the vin is:
SALLTGM33XA217692 (I dont know if this has a bearing on what sort of BCM it has)...

If you are planning on hanging on to the Disco for any amount of time, you should consider picking up a Nanocom or Hawkeye. They'll set you back around $450-500, but will allow you to tackle this kind of stuff yourself. It's not exactly rocket science.
Nanocom's have very good resale values: second hand Evo's typically sell on Ebay for over $400, while the older Nanocom One's fetch over $300. Even if you decide the Disco isn't a long term proposition you should be able to recoup most of your investment in a diagnostic tool, and you'll save yourself a barrow load of cash on the $$$$ mechanics and dealers charge for hooking up to diagnostic gear.

I've been out of the trade for some time now and have got behind the times.
I'm really keen to learn about vehicle diagnostics and it sounds like the 2 units would be worth looking at. not only for work here but overseas where I reside half the time in the Philippines. Most mechanics there dont know anything about fuel injection, or ECM/ECU/BCM's diagnostics.
I've got a couple of mates here who do a bit of that work. they may even have those tools already. I'll hunt them down tomorrow.
I just looked up the nanocom and I think I need a ncom15 for motronic V8 discoveryII, so I guess they are model specific.
