Thread: To Chip or performance exhaust system TD5 Auto

Eek. Do a search on here for Td5 chip. There must be a thousand threads, and a thousand people that will tell you to just do it.

As for exhaust, pretty sure the guy you saw might have a vested interest by the sound of it.

....... but be sure to get an EGT gauge! and if you drive by it you wont do damage.

Plenty of threads on this and other forums about how to read and react to the EGT reading.

x2 - just had remap - excellent towing improvement - don't go for plug in chips - they are the ones that can go wrong

Don't replace the exhaust system. The standard exhaust system is sized fine. However, replacing the mufflers with free flowing straight through units does help the turbo out - I run a Lukey straight through centre muffler and two hot dog style resinators - one before and one after. Replacing the whole system is expensive and a waste of time as the aftermarket replacements are sized the same!

Chips on the other hand are also very worthwhile. My recommendation - do both.

Larger diameter exhaust won`t give you more performance, but will help the turbo spool up a little quicker and get rid of some heat ( especially when towing ) as Td5`s run hot.
Ecu remap is the best way to go and cheaper too!

I have a Bruce Davis replacement chip in my 2000 TD5 and I removed the middle silencer/muffler thing. As the other blokes have said the standard exhaust is pretty good to begin with. I decided on this after much research.....

The result....the exhaust is only marginally louder but has a sound which is just glorious. The performance is remarkable. I've only had it about a week but so far I'm very impressed. I have a one ton camper trailer and can't wait to see how it performs on the beach.

We tow an 1800kg Van and have upgraded "chip" by Rover Spares. Vehicle perfoms much better, both with and without the van, making it a pleasure to drive. BUT, on warm days long climbs (out of Adelaide) or head winds (across Barkley Tablelands) running between 2,000 & 2,500 RPM the TD5 overheats which we overcome by shifting down a gear, and less fuel use until it cools down. EGT gauge as suggested in previous thread appears essential if towing.

Hi Geoff, you removed the middle muffler - I'm contemplating that also. Did you buy the after market bolt on replacement pipe or did you to a DIY 'cut n shut' job?
