drive it for a bit and light usually goes out.![]()
hi.
I briefly engaged CDL today (stubby lever front left (low CDL)). Light on dash went on with three chimes.
When I went to disengage it (stubby lever back right (high no CDL)) the dash light remains on.
Any thoughts?

If you are driving straight ahead on a surface with a lot of traction, such as a good dirt road with no loose gravel, it can take quite a while for the light to go out.
On a road with a very loose surface it can happen quite quickly.
If there is some bitumen coming up, it may even be necessary to stop and back up a bit while you are still on the dirt.

Used to happen quite often on my D1 when I first got it. I just used to reverse up the road a bit and it always went out. After it getting used to being in and out of difflock I never had the problem again. I think it's mainly lack of use that makes it stick.

I found if you had a 'grippy' dirt road the cdl didn't want to release easily. Also found it happened if all the wheels weren't equally worn (ie different diameters). I assume this is because of the tension in the box stops if from releasing. Most often got caught out when joining a bitumen road from a dirt road with insufficient warning. If caught on the bitumen, it would only release after going over a pothole or rough patch to allow rotational difference between the wheels. Or as advised above, stop and reverse.
My solution, if still on the dirt and it doesn't come out of lock immediately, is to hit the brakes short and sharp to create a short lock up of one or more of the wheels and it always comes out of lock. Need to be going in a straight line and not travelling fast.
Were you on bitumen when you had your little drive with cdl engaged?
if so it doesn't take much to have wound up some tension into the drive train.
I did it after fitting a new cdl lever and had to reverse quite a bit to unwind the tension which then allowed the cd to unlock.
Believe your light, on means locked! Just because you have selected the cable to the unlock position does not mean the internals have made the move.
Here is the responses to when I had my the hiccup

Thanks everyone for the explanation and advice.
reversed up the driveway and that disengaged it.
I was on sand...briefly. prob didn't need CDL at all, but it's there and I never get to use it so tried it.
lesson learnt.
have a good weekend all.
