Sorry should have mentioned 2000 model, 169500 km on the clock
I have a problem where under heavy throttle my TD5 starts surging ie the revs go up and down about 200 rpm repeatedly. Usually around 2700 rpm, but it has happened as low as 2000 rpm. Doesn't happen all the time, and I've had it revving to 3700 with no surging.
I read somewhere that collapsing turbo hoses can cause a similar problem but I can't find the link anymore. What do you knowledgeable blokes think?
Also, probably not related, sometimes the auto box won't unlock the torque converter in 4th or shift down under full throttle pulling a one ton trailer up Mount Ousley near Wollongong. I downshift to 3rd in the 80klm section but go back to D one it goes to 100, and I sometimes end up at 1800rpm with the pedal to the metal in 4th with the torque converter locked and going nowhere fast.
Any ideas?
Cheers, Alex

Mine was doing the same (also 2000 model) turned out to be the turbo wastegate valve. An easy fix.
I also had the surging and was very worrying. I was replacing my water pump and saw the waste gate valve and decided to just buy one because of the ease of replacing it. I got it from LR cause I couldn't be bothered waiting but places like LR direct, brit-car and island 4x4 will all have it much cheaper. With my dealings I've found island 4x4 to be the cheapest so far (ie genuine rocker cover gasket for 10£ as opposed to 25£ at LR direct). It's probably the easiest thing you can do in your rover but I think there may be a write up at discovery 2.co.uk but if you just have a look at the unit you shouldn't need it. Hope it's an easy fix for you, mine hasn't done the surging since replacing. Good luck.
Carefully check all hoses to / from the wastegate valve first, it may be a loose, cracked, or disconnected hose.
Trevor,
You have to be careful you are comparing the same items:
Island 4x4 don't sell genuine rocker cover gaskets.
Island 4x4 - Specialists in Land Rover and Range Rover Parts and accessories for all models. UK and worldwide mail order.
LR direct pricing for non genuine is pretty close.
Rocker Cover Gasket - Td5 Pre 1A - Land Rover Part ERR7094
For the later lvp000020 the situation the same.
Prices are general fairly close across sellers if you compare like to like. I find shipping is where the big differences lie. Some sellers insist on using £60 courier services for even small orders.
cheers
Paul
Thanks Paul, had a look again an its oem but I think compared to LR direct it is cheaper but not the disparity I mentioned before. I was Charged 60£ or the following order and thought it was reasonable:

Alex, what you are describing could be the ECU going into limp mode due to high manifold pressure.
The cause would be wastegate regulator/valve or a stuck wastegate itself. One wouldn't get this with de-laminated pipes since the manifold just wouldn't see enough pressure.
Going uphill the BCU would in this case see limp mode and if the TC was locked it would stay locked until you get to stop.
I'm pretty certain this is a over boost problem only.
Good luck
Thanks everyone for your help...BTW can anyone give me a pic showing where the waste gate valve is? I don't have rave or anything so am to a certain extent flying blind here...
Rave is easily found. Google rave01.iso and follow the green-oval.com link. Rave01.iso contains d2 and freelander content.
