When I fitted the rear extended roof rails to the D2 I had to drill out a 34mm hole from memory for the base of each rail to sit on.

There is a plate under the roof skin and I assume the larger hole is to allow the weight to bear on this plate and not the roof skin.

yes, the process for install was to drill from the bottom, through the "stud receptacle with about a M8 or similar drill bit. Then using that hole as centre, use a hole saw from the top. The foot of the rail therefore has two points of contact with the car. The stud protrudes through the hole. A larger circumference round footing then sits onto a bracket, and then there is the bit visible from the outside, which is the shape of the rail sitting on the roof, squeezing some foam rubber as the weather seal. The round footing which sits on a bracker btween the roof skin, and the roof lining in the "weight bearing" part. I think I have pictures from the install...wait a bit.

    Ahh....here we go....

From inside.....as part of the install of the rear rail, this is the tool they give you to create the centring hole for the holesaw.

Which then allows you to take a deep breathe and cut a hole in the roof.

So they all have the larger holes and plates, or just the extended rail rearmost holes?

I have just received the 3/4 steel roof rack and impressed with quality
Am in process of installing brackets an seem the height (hi mount brackets supplied) no problem but the width of vehicle seems will only allow for 2 holes to be used on each bracket instead of 4.
Although the brackets are very heavy duty.
Will post pics as soon as I install on vehicle as soon as I get a hand to lift into position,
Anybody else fitting the roof rack ?.

What length is that one? I'm looking at them but not sure which one to go for.
