Thread: Low transfer case oil=rear diff failure??

    For reference I've attached the revised remove/install procedure for the transfer case which supposedly takes an 1 hour less (3.1 vs 4.2 hours) than the previous method described in the RAVE pdf.

    I had my shims redone @ 110k km when the TC was out for fixing the seals. Didn't really need it done then but the LR specialist said they only last around 120k km to 150k km and if left too long, not only do you get backlash but the sun gears wear grooves in the main ring holding the sun gears. Seems like a bad design to me.

    Resolution

    Hi all, thanks for all your help. Got it to my mechanic and some nuts and bolts weren't countersunk properly so I was losing the oil and that caused the backlash. When I refilled the oil I guess I was being over sensitive to the backlash and I don't notice it anymore. The mechanic said it was normal for a d2 with that mileage and age so all good news. Trev.
