2002 Disco II V8 faults - which to tackle first?

Hi there, my 2002 V8 Discovery II is getting high on the km's, is about 285,000 currently. I love the car to bits, but I don't think I can hold off spending some money

Lots of niggly faults to be attended to:

Drivers side exhaust manifold to downpipe flange leaking due to sheared off bolt
Exhaust is on its last legs generally
Suspension clonks when changing direction from left to right and vice-versa
    Rear shocks useless
    Brakes pulsing a little
3 Amigos came on recently while braking on broken road surface. Won't go away
Indicator stalk - cannot switch to high-beam
Engine runs fine but pretty gutless
Air conditioning control panel lights blown (all the buttons, not the main display)
    Clock display not working properly
    Ignition barrel sometimes gets jammed
Rear LH (Nearside) rattle on bumps - goes away if brakes are pressed
About 12,000kms past last service interval
One horn button on steering wheel missing (the other one works)

So, bearing in mind the list, what should be tackled first, and if any of these items can be upgraded what do you suggest?

I have heard horror stories about front driveshafts letting go - bearing in mind the unknown history of this vehicle (other than it was dealer serviced all it's life until I bought it) - should this be a priority?

For the 3 Amigos, is there anyone near Western Suburbs of Melbourne who is willing to read my codes to find out what bit(s) to fix?

    Thanks in advance

    Darren

If it was me, in order I would:
    • service the vehicle. Including change/check all fluids, check prop shaft uni's, check all hoses/pipes.
    • check brakes/rotors and replace if necessary. There is a small chance this will fix your 3 amigo problem.
    • fix ignition barrel problem as you are going nowhere if it fails permanently.
    • Replace shockers and all suspension bushes. This may rid you of clunking/rattling issues.
    • as you live in the country, remove and inspect high beam switch.
    • remove exhaust header and fix broken stud. They are surprisingly easy to remove. Install new gaskets.
    • Fix blown globes, horn etc.
    • replace centre muffler with Lukey sports, or similar. It will then sound as god intended.
    • re-assess gutless motor issue. They are not particularly responsive at the best of times but makes up for it by consuming copious amounts of juice.
    Have fun!

    Hey Biggin,

Will that Lukey Exhaust make my V8 sound like a V8? (I'm 44, so I don't want to be hooning it!) But it would be nice to hear the engine.

How much are they and where would you recommend getting them from?

    Cheers

    Hi fizzer,
The new muffler makes it sound just right in my opinion, with no droning issues at all, and not too loud (I have a few years on you, and was a bit worried about the result).
It maybe my imagination but the motor seems a little more responsive as well.
Cost was a very reasonable $220 installed (for a s/s one), from my local exhaust specialist. I had hairline cracks in my old muffler, so it was a no-brainer really.
I had the rear resonator/ tailpipe replaced with a new s/s one at the same time, as it was hanging off, about 4" from the ground. This cost $110 installed and was the reason I went to the guy in the first place. The new resonator was a little smaller than the original, but I'm not sure how much this affects the noise.
Anyway, I'm very happy with the outcome.

Thanks for all that, great info. Are you in WA? If so where did you get your stuff done?

I think it's when you hit 40, you actually worry about other people's ears!

    Hi fizzer,
No, I moved from WA to Gippsland VIC about 32 years ago.
Sorry I can't help, but any good exhaust centre will be able to help you out.
    cheers,
    biggin

I would strongly suggest you get the safety related issues sorted first, i.e. brakes and suspension, assuming steering is okay, followed closely by the exhaust leak. The possibility of leaking carbon monoxide into the vehicle, especially on the drivers side, can't be good for you, your passengers or other road users.

Finally, a good service and change of exhaust should improve your existing performance and a good auto electrician can finish the rest.

    Regards,

    Peter

Thanks for the replies - one opinion is to service first, then do the suspension and brakes and the other says do the suspension and brakes then service :-) I am okay with most basic mechanical procedures, but only have problems when there's a need for special tools such as pullers or electronics diagnostics tools.
Is this something easy enough to tackle as DIY, or really need dealership/specialist? If the latter, any suggestions of West Melbourne businesses that are reasonable and trustworthy? My Disco came originally from Range-Rov automotive, but they are a long way away from where I live, and I am dubious of the ability of firms like Ultratune, ABS, etc. to know anything about Land Rovers :-)

    good luck with those opinions,,
but the very first time it wont start and you have to get it towed you'll think twice about the two inch lift dollars
( and it WILL happen up in the mountains somewhere--)
