    removing starter motor, 1999 TD5

What should have been a straight forward job, turned difficult when trying to remove the top nut holding the motor on. Just can't seem to get to it, would appreciate any advice , thank you , Bob

Massive pita, the top nut is a 15mm one from memory, I bought a deep 6point 3/8socket and (finally) was able to get the socket on from under the car and had to tap it on with a hammer as I had rounded the thing with 12 point sockets. My advice is definitely a deep 6 point and perhaps even a deep impact one ( I think that's what they're called, they're heavy as and can be bought from all tools and total tools for about 12$). It is a very satisfying feeling once that thing is off.

I also "lost" that top nut over the fence when I finally got it off.

Agree, and my sentiment exactly, a certain noisy crow is going to get a 15 mm nut where the sun don't shine when [if] I get it off, Bob

Got the motor off, with the help of no. 1 son, who could place his small hand thru the inlet manifold and place the 15 mm socket in place. After removing the starter motor, I removed the end cover of the solenoid for a look, quite a lot of oil in there, plus the two copper contacts were worn almost by half. Not surprising, I suppose, 1999 TD5, 346000km's, original starter.Wonder if I should be concerned about the alternator, although testing with a multimeter showed it was still charging to the max..Slowly learning how to replace significant engine parts Bob

I tackled the starter solenoid today after getting the dreaded click-click a week ago. Have a few trips planned in the next few months and don't want to get caught out.

I had no luck with tackling the top nut from below and up getting at it from above. I'm not a big guy so that probably helped as it was a matter of threading the ratchet and extension below the fuel cooler and over the top of the starter into position. This gave enough room to crack the top nut and I could undo by hand.

I ended up getting the LR replacement solenoid, but it turned what should have been quick and simple into an epic. Basically everything that could go wrong did. Two screws holding the solenoid assembly to the starter were frozen solid and I had to drill the heads off. Then when I unbolted the main housing the armature slid part way out - far enough that I had to spend 2 hours trying to move the brushes back far enough to get the armature to seat fully in the housing. If I had the instructions with me I probably wouldn't have made the stuff up with the armature, but even so it's not necessarily straight forward.

Anyway once I over came the problems it was pretty straight forward, and simple to reinstall the starter. The top nut went back on pretty easily too

The earth cable had a lot of broken strands at the point where it bolts to the body, and the battery clamp nut was frozen so I've also replaced that with a LR replacement.

    cheers

I have a pit and that helped access from underneath. A 3/8 socket set with an extension bar with the "rounded" ends that allows the socket to move a little really helps. IIRC a 6" extension is needed to have enough reach.

Yes, 3/8" is apparently the way to go. I only have 1/4" and 1/2" socket sets and wasn't that keen to buy the 3/8" bits just to do this job. The 1/2" 15mm socket is really a little long and fouls slightly on the starter body. I was using a 125mm wobble extension - I wouldn't have been able to do it without that, but it isn't long enough to clear the length of the starter. I have a industrial supplies place about 5 minutes walk from my place, and I paid them a visit mid-job, but they didn't have any 150mm wobble extensions in stock.

    cheers

I undid the top nut from up the top of the engine bay. I used a uni-joint (or maybe even two) and socket extensions to get to it. I had to remove the starter motor when I removed my automatic transmission to change the torque converter.

    %^$$#%$#%#^$ THING

I did this repair on our girl yesterday.. Took from 11:00 am till 3.00pm.

Getting it out was a BAR-STARD...

The bottom two bolts are 13mm so naturally I thought so was the top one....

I cam in at 12.30 pm and logged onto the forum and found out it is a 15mm

I had to go to Super Cheap to get a 15mm impact socket and I also got a 150mm extension as the ones I have are the short ones I have 3 or 4 but they add up to more than the 150mm or less..

The top nut was soo tight....... No matter how hard I tried I could not get it to budge.

I ended having to make up a small bar to slip over the handle of the 3/8 th rachet.

It still wouldnt move.. So at about 2.00pm I sat and rubbed my baby and asked her nicely to let the nut go so I could fix the starter.. Considering she has just come back from the panel shop and looks a million bucks..

I slipped back under and .......One go and the nut came off.

The plunger and contact repair took 20 mins and it was back in the truck in no time..

Took longer to pack up the tools..

Oh and an hour to wash the grease off my arms...

    Anyway ..Job Done... Happy Camper..........
