They're a spring band clamp, you don't crimp them.

The tool Ron linked to is basically a locking plier with notched jaws to securely engage with the clamp ears. You squeeze to open the against the spring action, then lock the pliers in the open position. You can then correctly position the clamp and release the pliers.

They turn what is otherwise an exercise in frustration in to a very simple task.

I like these type of clamps, they don't chew into the rubber hoses like jubilee type ones do.

The OEM one's are good because they give a constant pressure around the whole clip,but i would only use them once as over time lose tension.
Normal worm type clamps are hopeless because they do not do this.
The norma ones also look good

We use these type for large turbo's / intercoolers,, 100mm or more.
good for an individual OD range of 3mm,, its the mechanical/friction problem at small sizes I am wondering about:confused:

the OEM clamps provided are a one use clamp and should be replaced when you replace the hose.

The hoses youve pictured are failing, this is evident in the second picture where you can see the droplets are forming on the support for the inner lining of the hose.


generally non silicone hoses are "cast" from 3 pieces
1, the internal lining, this is the bit of the hose that does all the work (like the inner tube in a tubed tyre)
2. The reinforcing which is typically a nylon or natural "string" mesh
3. The protective outer lining (which now also doubles as both a secondary lining and reinforcement

common failure methods

1. Lining failure This is when the inernal lining starts to leak, the first symptom is usually coolant escaping along the reinforcing web and localised damp patchs or discolourations in the outer casing. later symptoms include a "crinkly" feeling when squeezing the hose and rubber turning up in the cooling system. Bulging of the hose can also occur if the protective lining looses its adhesion from the reinforment and the inner lining.

2. reinforcing failure, this is typically indicated by bulging of the hose with none of the previous symptoms

3. protective lining failure, this is usually mechanical damage and is visable to the eye.

The most common causes of hose failure (excluding manufacturing defects) are bad handling and installation procedures, Tightly bending the hose can cause ruptures in the inner lining, forcing the hose onto a fitting can cause delamination of the inner lining and the reinforment (which is typically limited to the end of the hose on the "outside" of the clamp) "Stretching" the hose onto a fitting or compressing it onto a fitting that is too small will typically cause failure of the reinforcing just past the end of the pipe that you are clamping the hose to.

Reusable as they are springs. The tool has a lock (the lever off the side) to hold the clip open.

:o:o ..... it's the top radiator hose and only been on 6000K's :(:(

yeah, quality control is not as good as it could be in some cases and neither are handling procedures.

Ive had a V8 one split while I was doing the initial pressure check.
