and look for oil at the ECU plug and clean it out
Coincidence...
Got a call from the wife who'd backed out of the drive, then had it conk out....
Turns over but no fire.
I had a ignition harness I'd been meaning to replace, so replaced it. There was a lick of oil on just one probe at the ECU, so cleaned that.
Still no joy. Checked in here to see what to do next. Fuel purge here we come....
Woo hoo. Working and purring after a drive.
Upon further consideration curiouser and curiouser.
When I did the fuel purge, I thought I should be able to hear the fuel pump whirring, but couldn't. I even stuck my head under the wheel arch and no sound. The engine did start, and the car drove around the block. The absence of sound during the ignition I put down to getting used to the resonance of a Lucas TR6 fuel pump :)
Anyway 30 mins later, I started the car and could hear the fuel pump whirring away when on Ignition 3 and sticking my head under the arch, there's no way I missed that sound earlier.
Intermittent fuel pump? If itstopped working, would there be enough fuel in the engine after a start (car had been idle for 36 hours) to back down a 50 metre drive, stop at the letter box then reverse into the road before running rough then immediately cutting out?
Bet that feels good.
And you think the problem was?
Fuel?
Harness?
cheers
I'm starting to think that they may not have been related? The rough running On start may be independent of the fuel pump cutting out.
I'll know in the morning after she's been standing overnight.

is as unlikely as this one sounds, I HAVE had a similar error on my father's car that turned out to be electric cables above the automatic transmission, which was short-circuited and hadde destroyed ECU box under the driver's seat (note the right-hand drive) I have pictures if you need but I do not know how to insert pictures on the forum send a pm so I will email them. Sincerely, / Anders Sweden
Tack så mycket Anders - mine's a manual, but I'll check all the wires anyway.
Good and bad news today though.
After a cold night, it started first kick and no roughness :)
But she conked out later in town. It's not related to the rough running at start, so I'll start another thread to stop drift.
You should be able to clearly hear the fuel pump if you are standing next to the drivers door and turning the ignition key.
Pumps don't have to scream to be crook - when you can't hear them is generally a sign that they are not working properly.
Another thing to try when the engine cuts out - bang the bottom of the tank with a lump of wood or rubber mallet. You should then hear the pump whirring away and it should start.
Cheers,
Franz
