    Turbo Actuator..Whats inside??

    Hello,
Having a few troubles with my turbo over boosting. My line of thought was to put a bigger pipe from the inter-cooler pipe to the actuator so it sees boost quicker and be a bit more responsive as limiting the boost, bigger pipe more volume going to the actuator. Before drilling and silver soldering on a bigger pipe and melting everything inside. What is inside the the actuator ?? anything that will burn. Looked everywhere on the net and there does look to be a rubber diaphragm in there, if so cold solder will be the way to go.
Sort of looking at 12mm pipe I do have a boost box (td5 alive boost box goes to limp mode at about 20-22psi) and the turbo is a VNT on a TD5. As getting a over boost fault all the time.

    Thanks
    Ian

if its a VNT then its wound on too hard if its causing overboost. as you probably know the VNt is ment to produce a steady boost state without using a wastegate.

Is there any chance what you are calling the wastegate actuator is actually the vane actuator?

If thats the case the way the actuator works is a different bucket of fish to a turbo wastegate.

Just thinking. Wouldn't a smaller pipe presurise faster?

There is definitely a rubber diaphram inside. If you overheat it you will damage it.

Get an Alive Tuning MAF sensor. With it, I'm running up to 24psi with my VNT and not having any overboosting issues!

    Hello,
    Thanks for your replies,
I am not getting any MAF faults only a over boost fault. The if I keep the engine under 20psi then no troubles, looking at the evo the MAF never gets above 600 I have the MAF bypass and a volt limiter on the sender wire so it never get above 4.6 volts.
I am trying to sort out one for the MAP this weekend. Have rigged up a volt switch and a regulated power supply so when 4.6v is reached it switches to the regulated supply of 4.7volts then at 4.3volts switches back to the normal signal. Make sense????

The idea is to give the actuator more air, more flow so keeps the engine on the set 18psi it is set for it does wonder around a far bit. So I will go to plan B.

    is this on a disco?

your not runnning the waste gate modulator are you? the black box on the ac comp? Because that needs to be disconected when using a vnt.

Becasue the vnt does not have a waste it was an actuator that adjust's the pitch of the vanes. as dave said.

Ive run a BAS boost box and the new irb dual limter box and have never hit over boost ( pushing close to 30psi at times)

also what turbo are you runnning?

Nor was I, but the Alive Tuning MAF still solved the issue. I was not registering any MAF faults on either my Nancom Evolution nor on Justin Coopers diagnostic laptop thingo (Rovacom?). However, I still had a problem. I spoke to Alive Tuning and they told me about they're uprated MAF for GBP$75.00. I ordered it and it solved my issue. I don't know the technicalities, just that it worked...

    Hello,
Yes have disconnected the modulator. Will check the hoses tomorrow have been looking at the IRB box but will have to save up a bit for that. Will disconnect the MAF tomorrow and give it a go to isolate the problem
this is the fault I am getting

Not much about the MAF have been having this ever since I installed the turbo it is S208 Turbo Technic s from BAS. have TD5 Alive boost box. Done the bypass really getting to me know i have a really good fuel map from TD5 inside. I know Mark at Beechboro 4X4 has had trouble with his boost box from them as well . You see the evo reading 1.4 bar them 00.00 cuts out limp mode if the boost box working it should read that high.

Please let me know if you ever get a response or find where to buy an IRB box from. I have been trying to order one but get no response.

If you are having trouble getting in contact with Ian from IRB he his normally very busy with his fulll time job at JLR,

Try talking to Pete from BAS as they are 'business' partners, and im sure he will be able to help you out.

Also 1.4 bar is 20.3 psi which is when the factory overboost kicks in, so I dont think your boost box works.
