Sounds daft but check the fuel cap has done up properly. the o ring on the cap can bind up beofre it is actually tight and you will get a fuel smell.
had that on ours a couple of times, although not to the extent you are mentioning.
Hi Guys,
Was hoping someone might be able to shed some light on why I may be getting a fairly heavy,at times, fuel smell in the cabin of my 2001 D2 V8?
There is no visible fuel leak anywhere, tank fills ok,no obvious fuel efficiency issues,no loss of power and no dash warnings either...!!
The fuel smell is on and off though probably a bit more 'on' rather than 'off'.
Has anyone faced a similar issue before or know what it may possibly be causing this smell of fuel?

If the fuel cap isn't holding pressure yes you will get a fuel smell. Test the cap by blowing against the little valve in the centre of the cap. About 1/2 of the 10 year old fuel caps I come across are stuffed. You can use an ordinary Falcon/Holden screw-in one, they work the same.
If the cap is holding pressure then check all the lines to do with the tank venting system, the vapour line runs to the charcoal canister under the bonnet and is controlled by an electric valve before being sucked in by the engine. All plastic plumbing on D2's is prone to shattering.
How is the car running? Does it idle nice? Any chance you have a missfire and your smelling the unburnt fuel out of the exhaust?
Spark plug leads, coil packs?
on the throne
I have the same problem in my P38. thought maybe the injectors were blocked up a bit so put some cleaner through the system. no difference yet. The smell isn't there when moving but whenever I stop and turn the car off the smell is terrible.
Is it normal to get 250 from 60 of LPG btw?

thanks Pedro I had no idea if that was right or not. Still looking for my and midnightblue's problem problem
i think I have found the culprit for my fuel smell in the cabin. I took the RHR wheel arch guard off and found the small hose (breather hose?) had broken off. I have hopefully temporarily repaired this but I do need to find a new replacement part.
Midnightblue did you fix your problem?
Dont know if you solved your problem or not midnightblue but a perished injector O-ring could be also be the culprit. Once stopped the residual fuel pressure in the fuel rail can force fuel past a split or perished O-ring. Obviously the smell will be stronger with the bonnet open.....
To check just run your engine then turn it off and inspect your injectors with a torch.
