Question First gear reluctance 04 TD5 Manual

Hi gents, I purchased my vehicle last december, one owner classic 04 TD5.
Not long before I purchased the vehicle it was fitted with a new clutch kit, including slave cylinder. I found actuation of the clutch pedal became "stiff" after a long trip, so, after noticing how close the steel pipe/tube at the slave cylinder is to the exhaust pipe, (about 30mm)I bled the system. the oil was brown and thick. There was a definite improvement in the pedal feel. The clutch drives not far off the floor, which isnt a problem, BUT, I have times when say at the lights, in neutral, then going for first, the selector does not want to engage first at all, it is lousy. So, not sure if it is the clutch, 1st synchro from the previous owners use, or a typical issue with the gearbox.
Could someone please bring me up to speed with any known purculiarities of this gearbox. Cheers, Shawry. CQ.

Typical of a clutch not releasing properly. Considering the condition of the fluid, the master cylinder may clogged so flushing clean fluid through might be sufficient. If the synchro was worn the gears would crunch.

Mine does this. But I have found that a quick row in neutral then trying 1st again usually sorts it. It does NOT like to be put back into 1st whilst still moving. My D2a has 76000km's and I am running Castrol Syntrans.

Thanks Robbo, the plan has been to change out to the castrol synthetic, so shall do soon. Sounds as though you have done some trick modifications, does the chip and exhaust pipe make a good difference ?? how about a bigger inter cooler, is that the go. I'm not disatisified with the stock performance, but we can all do with a little more ! Cheers Shawry.

    Shawry.
I decided to go for the all or nothing aproach in uping the performance of my Disco so I can not comment on the improvements of individual items. But as a package, it is very good. These mods were done because we have a big caravan although without the van it is quite a spirited drive. It still has pronounce turbo lag though but when on boost it is a weapon.
    Regards
    Robbo
