My Td5 rebuild is FANTASTIC
Well, after such a long wait (15 weeks
) I got the girl back a couple of weeks ago. Well last week I did a work trip, Melb, Benalla, Wangaratta, Albury, Yarrawonga, Shepparton then home to Melb..... 960km and used exactly 101 litres wearing her 33's and muddies.... gotta be happy with that I think.
She ran like a swiss clock.

Sounds good,, nothing like feeling happy with a rebuild,,
So now I guess your hanging for a trip,,

Crankshaft, bearings, rings, harmonic balancer (which was the start of the problem), water pump, 1xconrod straightened (was out by 4 thou)..... and pretty much everything else lol

How much did it cost you? I am considering something similar to try and iron out all my TD5 woes once and for all....

pressure building up in expansion bottle
hi my td5 has a lot of pressure building up in the expansion bottle does anyone know what could be causing this? new to landrovers.did your landrover have this similar problem? thanks

G'day Willis,
When the harmonic balancer delaminates it can (apparently usually does) do some damage to the crankshaft. It's really just a matter of how much damage it does. In many cases mechanics will locktite the pulley on anyway and off you go. Problem is that if ever there IS a need to get the pulley off.... you can't.
My mech told me he could do the locktite thing but recommended I sell the car of he did.
Since I didn't really want to go through the whole thing of once again removing front and rear lockers etc I decided that I might as well do the thing properly and just keep the car until it falls apart (which was always my intention anyway) Original budget was about $7k.
Total cost including a replacement front drive shaft, straightening of one con rod (by 1/2000") and loads of other bits and pieces was just under $11k.
This engine is now the smoothest, vibration free Td5 I've ever exeprienced and the further I drive it (now have almost 20k on it since March 2012) the better it gets.
The car now has 286,000km on it.
Worth the money? Maybe. All up this car now owes me about $18k and it has everything, F & R lockers, lift, exhaust, bullbar, winch...... and on and on including a reco'd transmission only 50km old when i got it. Can I replace it for that? NO. So for me it's definitely worth it (it is insured for $23k). I have a fantastic live axle vehicle with everything I need.
All I need to do now is get it chipped
