Thread: Plans for Side Steps / Rock Slider

Your plans look similar to the rovertym/rte sliders. I bought mine from trs in Adelaide, 265 (+90 postage). A difference is that the U-piece follows all under the sill on mine. They are a heavy durable piece of equipment. I would suggest using something to stop rust (if possible) or at least slow it's progress as the rovertym ones rust very quickly. I'm not sure if you've looked at rovertym but they weld what looks like 2 pieces and it weighs about 20-25kg each. Enjoy.

I did look at running a 'complete' channel along the sil like those, but as I am not likely to smash around to much I thought I would save weight and go the styrup style.

Was contemplating using galvonised angle for the styrups, but not sure how much it would be compromised by drilling to attach to the sil.
Paint will probably be satin black, of the killrust variety.

These are the ones I made. I had great fun designing then, buying a welder, remembering how to weld and discovering all the mistakes I made along the way. Still, there is no better feeling than standing back and looking at something and saying..... i made those.

I thought the tubes were more work then just the box.

Did you buy channel to connect to the sil or created it from flat bar or angle?

By the way what did you paint yours with, as I was looking for the satin finish as well.

I bought 90 deg elbows which made the job heaps easier. I got the sill channel bent for me at an engineering place then welded it all together. I like the look of the pipe better than the box, but each to their own.

I like the look of the pipe, but I have small children, so by the time I add some grip to the box section I think it might be easier for them to use.

Also I am trying to keep my project budget to a minimum, hence using the sizes and material. Apparently under 2 metre lengths is considered an offcut, and goes in the clearance bin.

So I have finally got around to assembling and fitting my Side Steps / Rock Protection.

After a few little hiccups and some modification on the run, they stick out a bit more then I would have liked, but still very happy. Good Solid platform for the kids and wife to scramble in and out on, and perfect for reaching the roof.

Just doing some road testing to see if I need to do any more modification before I throw on some paint (Polymer Body Deadener, hopefully should be a bit more resistant to stone chips, scraps etc).
