So the exhaust is leaking, both at cylinders 1 & 5, and I'm using this as an excuse to tidy up a few things in that part of hte engine bay.
Got the turbo off okay, as well has hoses etc, but I can't seem to get the socket securely on to the nuts on the bottom half of the exhaust manifold. Top ones (those that were there) came away easily enough. Do I need to use a special narrow wall socket for this job, or am I just not holding my tongue at the right angle?

Yeah, somewhere. I have a read from time to time when something is particularly perplexing, but generally manage to find my way around the bonnet without too much trouble.
Got the water pump off (it's quite a job this weekend) and it's full of this brown gunk. My first thought was that there was some corrosion in the engine (previous owner has been running the green coolant), but I'm starting to suspect that it's actually power steering fluid leaking through and mixing with the water. There is definitely some fluid leaking form that part of the engine bay, and suspect no 1 is the PS pump.
Any thoughts?

Manifold not back on yet. It's at the shop being 'skimmed', I hope, although it is substantially warped according to my straight edge. I'm not convinced it can be machined as two of the ports are about 2-3mm different to the rest. How much can you take off these things and still be reliable???
I'll take your advice and have another squiz of the Rave, although job is mostly done now. I pulled pretty much everything off the left hand side of the engine trying to sort out some leaking oil and missing coolant. Found one gasket missing, one manifold stud missing, and a couple of other dodgy bits. Supposedly serviced by a 'well known' Landrover mechanic in central qld. More than happy to PM anyone the name of a mechanic to avoid if they like.
Anyway, mostly back together bar the turbo and manifold. Curious about opinions of the gunk in the water pump though. I'm hoping its just an emulsion of power steering fluid and coolant.
Your post prompted me to do my manifold as I knew I had a broken stud.
Removed manifold to find it was also like a banana & gasket mostly burned away on number 5
I measured the manifold by placing it face down on a 6mm sheet of toughened plate glass, warpage = 1.75 mm
After grinding away the webs the stress relief pulled it back to 1.2mm warped.
So if your planning on dewebbing , better to do before getting it planed.
Car runs noticeably quieter now, I thought that noise was normal
(Whilst I was at it I replaced all the hoses and thermostat, for its 150,000 klm birthday, what an absolute mongrel of a job, lucky I did too because the small hose that goes from the front of the radiator to the fuel cooler was almost rubbed thru to the inner layer from sitting against a corner of the steering box )
Manifold is currently at the shop for machining - I asked them to partially deweb it as well, so hopefully they'll remember!
I'll hve to have a check of that hose you're talking about too, not that any of the rest have been a problem so far, but worth a look.
While the manifold is off, replace the small hose tucked under the manifold, going to the oil cooler. This has probably copped a heap of hot exhaust gas and hardened it.
Also as well as removing the web, I drill out the outer 4 holes on the exhaust manifold a few sizes to allow movement - Alloy head, cast manifold - different rates of expansion with temperature change.

Yeah, done that, also replaced all the gaskets in the area of the oil cooler, water pump, power steering pump gasket etc. It's been a job![]()
