would this be a good buy?

Hi all. only signed up recently because we are looking to buy a d2 to tow our camper around WA. I'm alitttle confused about how reliable they are but a couple of my friends own one and their advise was that they are good cars if looked after well. I am reseanably experienced with mechanics, having serviced and rebuild motorbike engines, so little things should not be a worry.
Anyhow. I came across this on Ebay and wondered whether someone more experienced could give me some advise. It sounds a good deal, but does it have alll the numbers and letters? ACE, ABS, TRC ect..
And what should questions might be helpful. I read the sticky's re D2 but there is just so much info. I concluded that most of the time potential buyers just took the plunge and hopped for the best. Anyhow ,thanks in advance for all the good tips, cheerrs Harald

sorry forgot the link the first time

Ask about these common issues for car of this km.

When was the oil pump sprocket bolt checked for tightness and locktite? Mostly aproblem on earlier models but if not it needs to be checked.

When was the injector harness last changed? At 170k it should have been changed at least once maybe twice, if not it will need to be soon, (needs attention approx every 70-80k km)

When was the fuel pressure regulator last replaced.?

When was the water pump last replaced?

HAs the recall for the fuel lines rubbing at the tank been done. This can checked by enteringthe VIN on the topix website to access outstanding recalls.

Price of 17k seems a wee bit high even witht the suspension and cargo bits.

Looks good! DOM is 05/2004 which would make it one of the very last D2a's made. It's a Classic Town. The all white front bar looks good!

I think for the asking price it's pretty fair ... subject to inspection of course.

The Classic Town originally had 18" rims ... this one has 16" rims of an earlier design, so someone has swapped the wheels at some point (16" are better for offroad anyhow).

just found out that the classic country came with 16" originally, but no leather seats. Might be a mix and match model

Looks like a good example, and welcome to the forum!
Seeing as the seller has another modified disco in the background, they've probably taken good care of it.
    Good luck with your purchase!

    Al,
You're mixing scheduled servicing tasks and factory recalls with, things to look for with the benefit of Disco knowledge that may confuse people.

I've never had an oil pump bolt checked as part of a factory service nor seen a scheduled injector harness change at 70-80k kms or had a fuel pressure regulator swapped out during a service just because it 'might have needed it'...........

I'm sure you will agree that the majority of servicing is as per a Factory schedule and now-days, repair by replacement is standard procedure when a part fails.

I DO acknowledge however, that with the benefit of years of LandRover experience that I DO carry a spare injector harness and fuel pump (Mandatory in my off-road Disco), have taken the sump off all of my mates and my own TD5's to check and re-loctite the oil pump bolt as well as check the fuel lines for chafing on the chassis rails......and remove the EGR as well as cat converter for longer engine life

BTW - have never had a water pump or pressure regulator fail in any of my Discos including my 2nd that clocked up 450+k kms!

    Cheers!

That was the reason for the post Catster, I am not confused with the difference between factory service issues and a marques mechanical idiosyncracies.

The car has been looked after by a qualified mechanical engineers, does not equal full service history by a LR appproved service outlet, specially might not have had the recalls done! (My neighbour is a licensed aircraft engineer and is as rough as guts with his vehicles).

If the issues asked about in my post have been considered, dealt with, then that is less a purchaser might have to worry about occuring in the near future.

At least having raised them the prospective purchaser is now made aware of them. As you acknowledge they are real issues.

I do agree with the preceeding opinions that on the face of the ebay description it looks like a fine example.
