Td5 running rough and whistling on boost

The old d2 has been crook for a little while, with the rough idle, missing and the occasional whistling which has gradually gotten worse. She is slowly losing power as well.
I have done the usual checks for oil in the loom etc, checked the exhaust manifold, intercooler blah blah...

Then I noticed there was a little blow by telltale on the exhaust manifold near where the turbo mounts. I checked around and found 2 of the 3 nuts were missing!
The turbo was about to part ways with the rest of the motor.

2 little nuts later, a bit of cursing because the lower one is a tad hard to get too, and the old girl is like a new truck. Power is back, roughness has all gone and no whistling.

Morale of the story, look for the easy things first. If it looks ok, test it anyway.

A happy land rover ending ha ha.

Mine whistles at 2100rpm and then when you let off then on again it goes away, like it needs to work the air out or something. Is that similar to what you were having? I haven't noticed any drop in power?

Don't think I made myself clear, at 2100+rpm it whistles then when you let off and back up it goes away 90% of the time the first time and always the 3rd. This only happens at the start of every trip then stops once I hit 2100. I can drive above 2100 without the whistling but I have to accelerate very slowly, then afterwards I can put my foot down and no whistle. I always attributed it to The centrifugal filter not having enough oil in it but then eventually it's well lubricated. I don't know, been going in for a while, worried me at first but couldn't find anything wrong and haven't seen a loss in power either.

Sounds different, mine was a loud whooshing/whistling when on boost, regardless of what gear I was in. It was quite obvious it was a boost related issue, I was just not able see it at first, obviously the nuts came loose at first, that's why I didn't find the problem until they fell off and became very very obvious even to a blind bloke!

Thankfully a cheap and easy fix this time ha ha.

    Howdy Gents,

I have the same issue, the whistling sounds almost like a fan belt slipping. My mech mates say that it is the exhaust manifold. They aren't heat treated in the factory, they wrap and break the bolts. I'm just about to get mine fixed in a couple of weeks. Removal of exhaust manifold and machine it down flat, tap out the broken bolts and refit.

replace with stainless steel head bolts, even better go out to 10mm! Thats what Coopers here in Syd did to mine.
