TD5 Top Hose pressure - How hard is too hard?

I bleed them using the coke bottle method, havent had to do anything more than that for over 90% of the tdi/5 family.

Thanks all, I'll try a re-bleed on the ramps over the weekend...

Used the coke bottle method myself (well a 2L plastic fruit juice bottle) when I replaced the water pump. all good and no need to lift the expansion tank out of its holder. :)

not a gurgle from low air con gas?

Hmm, I never bled coolant with an engine running... I just raised the tank and had the heater running with ignition on... i assumed the heater valve would open even if the engine isn't running. I haven't got any over-heating issues and car runs like a dream but I'll still re-do it now with the engine running otherwise I won't be able to sleep at night lol.

There's no heater valve ... the heater coolant flow circuit is open and running all the time whenever the water pump is turning.

So is it really necessary to run the heater when bleeding coolant in d2? I checked rave and it says just to raise the expansion tank and fill the coolant till you see a steady stream coming out of the bleeder hole.

I don't think it would hurt. When I changed my water pump recently I bled it according to RAVE but ended up having it leak from the overflow hose :s.
I decided to start to figure out my issue and a HG was my worst fear; I started at the simplest/cheapest option and re-bled the system with the car running and heater full blast and since then I haven't had an issue with my coolant leaking :).
I guess what I'm trying to say is that it can't hurt to run the heater if it is indeed always open; just for piece of mind I would do it :)

As Kev said in the post you quote there is no heater valve so it makes no difference whether the heater is running or not.

My advice is follow RAVE bleed procedure - it is tested and should work. Some AULROian's go in for the "2 belts, 3 pairs of braces, and half a dozen spares of each, just in case" approach to what is really a straight forward task. :wasntme:
