    Disco 2 TD5 vs Disco 2 TD5 updated

Was there really much difference between the original TD5 and the updated version or was it just the headlights and re-introduction of the central diff lock?

    Is the reliability the same?

    Performance?

    Fuel economy?

    Electric wizardry?

according to d2a owners about eleventy billion differences and deserve their own forum, just ask stevo68!
but yes many differences most notably the cdl reinstalled but many others, search on here it has been mentioned before.
if your looking to buy would try for a d2a over the d2 if you can find a good one but mainly just because they newer.

I think the timing belt has changed to timing chain & a oil cooler (silver thing across the front of the engine ) & a few small things like fuel cap release is on the right side .

Quite a bit more was changed but it was more a case of refining what was there rather than major changes.

    Some of these changes included:
Revised front hub carriers with caster changes
Brake master cylinder and calipers for improved pedal feel
    Altered rear suspension geometry
    Altered spring and shocker rates
    Revised SLABS ECU
    Revised ACE ECU

    What is "FPR"?
    2003 D2a Auto TD5 good Landy gone
2015 D4 probably the most amazing yet, why get a RR?

I have owned both, stupidly an 2003 model (D2a) and then a D2.

I am not a mechanic but noticed or rather missed a few refined items like silly little things such as the AC would go in half degrees, it would take 2 pushes in the D2a to go up or down. This was annoying until I owned a D2 and found that middle degree was needed,

if looking at buying I would only look at D2a as they seemed more refined and they are newer

The the Fuel pressure regulator changes aren't a D2/D2a difference.

The change of FPR relates to the change to a EU3 compliant version of the Td5 motor that occurred at the start of 2002 Model Year (or more precisely from VIN 2A736340).

While there are lots of comments on the D2a intercooler, Microcat lists only 2 part numbers for the Td5 Intercooler - with a change over between parts at VIN 1A711530. So perhaps LR changed the part without revising the part number? The "D2a" intercoolers have a non-LR part number of BTP5649 and judging by european wrecking sites were fitted to MY02 vehicles also. Bundalene posted pics of a BTP5649 radiator with a manufacture date of 08/02/02 so it is fairly likely these were fitted to pre-facelift D2's.

    cheers

Yes there are differences but are they really worth around $11000+ difference in price. It depends what you want it for. For me using it as and off roader I prefer the money in my pocket for mods.
    Cheers, David.

A change occurred in the programming of the ecu somewhere along the line as the earlier TD5s were a bit jumpy in low range. In the lower gears when walking the car over something the ecu would be a little rough and fuel the thing up such that it was difficult to be smooth.

Then there is the plastic dowels in the heads in the earlier ones as well as something with the oil pump bolt or something else that can result in loss of lube.
