Hmm,
I'm looking at a 2000 TD5 with 160k used for school runs and land rover serviced last 18 months or,
a 2002 (updated) TD5 with 200k not sure on service history.
The 2000 is within the price range of SWMBO, the 2002 is a few grand more......
decisions, decisions, decisions.
The CDL internals were dropped in the last few months 2001MY production. Any D2 built before about April 2001 will have the internals unless the transfer box has been replaced with one missing the internals.
I'd be leaning to the 2000 - the 160K kms and dealer service for the last 18 months trump 200K km and a slightly newer model. The small number of changes in the 2002MY aren't anything to write home about.
The dealer should be sticking to the book services, and is more likely to pick up on faults. It's worth calling the service manager at the place it was serviced and see what they can tell you about work done and any outstanding issues.
However, 3A or 2003MY production began in early May 2002 and a 3A with 200K Km could be worthwhile if it passes inspection. One that has been used as a tow vehicle could well be an expensive proposition.
cheers

Is the extra spend worth it? It depends on what you are comparing too. In my case up until very recently I was advertising my 2004 D2a for sale on the forum intending to trade up to a D3. I quickly realised that in order to get what I was looking for I would need another 20 grand (for a TDV6) which doesn't make sense for me right now, so I've decided to keep it as it's a good one.
I believe many D2a owners stick with these vehicles on the same basis in that they are in my opinion better than earlier D2's (I previously owned a 2001 model) and offer a bridge to the D3 albeit a tenuous one (D3's being more than significantly better again of course).
In summary, the development cycle over the life of the D2 certainly improved the car to the extent that a D2a when compared to a D2 is a better car in a number of ways, it's a good proposition for a daily driver for sure. Does it outweigh the price differential? I would say so just, but probably only because I can't afford a D3?
I would also note that just because of this don't think for a moment that it's any more reliable as I do not believe it is. My car has suffered from a few minor issues during my ownership nothing major but annoying all the same but tellingly it's been about as reliable as the 2001 model.
I reckon if you snag a good D2 full stop and you continue to service it and carry out preventative maintenance regularly it doesn't matter what one you end up with but where you can get one with a CDL.
Cheers
If its a 2A he must be blind not to notice the headlights
