Photo of TD5 console lights - anyone

    Hi,
I'm off to look at a 03MY TD5 S, over the weekend and was wondering if anyone had a photo of all the lights that should show on the console when the ignition is turned on.

I want to make sure all the bulbs are working and that none has been disabled to hide a fault

I'm also making a check list of items to go over, if anyone has any 'special tips' or 'ones that most people forget' I'd be most grateful.

It would be even better if there was someone knowledgible in Canberra that wanted to come and give me a hand.

A lot of the "must check" points are actually pretty difficult/impossible to check without removing heat shields, the acoustic cover, or dropping the sump.

One thing that caught me out on the first D2 I inspected was the heat shield over the main muffler. The car made a horrendous clattering at 2-2500 rpm, and the owner told me "they all do that". I ended up passing on the vehicle because I thought this noise was just plain wrong. When I purchased my D2 I was chasing a similar but far less extreme version of the same clatter and discovered that the muffler heat shield clips work loose and the heat shield resonates. It's an easy fix with M6 flange nuts.

Take along some cotton buds/cotton swabs, and use these as "dip sticks" to check the colour of the brake fluid, PAS fluid and ACE fluid if fitted. Because they are white you'll get a pretty good indication of any discolouration in the fluids.

Check the oil for level and colour. It will be pretty dark but if regular changes have been kept up it you should be still able to easily see the dipstick through the oil.

Take a small torch with you and use that to look at the hoses and side of the block on the passenger side of the engine. There are plant of rub points and potential for leaking hoses, water pump leaks etc so check to see if there is anything obvious in that area.

On the Drivers side check the hoses for condition, and take note of any obvious signs of drips, dried coolant etc. Have a peer down between the firewall and the pack of the engine, if there is any sign of fresh oil you'll have a leaking cam cover gasket. Not a difficult job but factor in $120-150 for genuine gasket and rubber grommets that sit under the cover bolts. Add labour on top if you aren't DIY'ing.

I'd suggest getting underneath and having a look for any signs of leaks. I have a stock D2 and it's easy enough to wiggle under without any trouble. Take your torch with you can look around the engine, and up beside the block at the underside of the cooling hoses and ancillaries. Fluid leaks will be far more obvious from this angle than from above, so you'll pick up whatever the detailers have missed

While you are under the vehicle have a look at the uni joints on the front drive shaft. I'm not sure that a quick wiggle will tell you that much but really you are looking for obvious signs of neglect.

Have a look around the transmission and transfer case for oil leaks.

If it's fitted with ACE check the actuator boots aren't split.

    cheers
    Paul

    Hi

Check all of the recalls have been done, check between the tank and body for rubbing on the fuel lines, mine dropped fuel everywhere when the fuel pump wiring harnes rubbed through the fuel lines. (Need a hoist to do this and then it's hard to see).(Think this was one of the recalls?)
Check for leaks under manifold drivers side rear of engine. Fuel pressure regulator. Check the rubber donut rear diff for cracks or perishing.

Check drivers side front window operation, the regulators often wear out.

Check the dash lights on start up.

Oil pump bolt. Mine was finger tight and had no locktite. (2002 build).

    Service history.??

Have a chat to the previous owner if you can find him/her.
