So you want to tow all week,,
but on weekends you want no
tow bar tongue
or no bar work at all?
G'day,
anyone got any ideas about how to modify the towbar to increase departure angle? i don't want to compromise strength in any way as i tow a trailer all week and on weekends use a reece hitch receiver as my rear recovery point, but with the new rear bar almost finished (post later with pics) and the quarter panel cut, the towbar is by far the lowest point at the back.
Any ideas?
Cheers,
Alex

yeah I know, I want to have my cake & eat it too...
The towbar tongue comes out on weekends & is replaced with the recovery point, but the main structure of the towbar is still hanging down there
what sort of towbar is "hanging down there"? the only time my tow bar drags is when my departure is very , very steep and I really shouldnt be dropping in there.......
I just measured the height of mine, its 610mm off the ground, I also invert the hitch so the tongue is upper.
Take the hitch block right out for a greater departure angle.

I've never seen the point of those slide in recovery hitch thingo's, look like another point of failure, just do away with that, keep the standard towbar and hook your strap or whatever round the 'hitch pin', this is what i do. Your only legal oftion is for a complianced towbar, so you've got standard and hayman reece, arb etc. I think standard is the best in the departure department.
The other option is to build a bar with an in-built tongue, then send it away for a destructive test, get the design signed off, build another one and install it, expensive and what do you gain 80mm?, not worth it, just drag it.
