    Rear Drive Shaft Flange Question

Just got a question on the rubber flange in the rear drive shaft. I know they wear out, is one of the symptoms a tight shudder in the driveline of the vehicle that is worse when the driveling is under load?
If not what else may cause these symptoms?

    rear drive shaft flange

Could cause the shudder you describe.
the flanges,(Rotorflex) couplings are pretty durable, can wear faster if you have a lift.check for signs of cracking in the rubber or if they are soft.
They should feel fairly stiff not sloppy. If you suspect it buy a genuine replacement not aftermarket.
having said that Landrover issued a warning not long ago about a batch of genuine replacements that were considered sub-standard.

you may also look at your front driveshaft and check that out for play or stiffness.
Maybe a check of engine mountings as well.

Also check your front prop shaft.

I replaced the rotoflex in mine with a non genuine (big difference in price) just as routine maintenance exercise. The one I pulled out was still ok and no issues with the replacement part.

Check UJ's and transmission brake as the shoes can vibrate on the backing plate. My rotoflex gave a vibration only at 95-105 km/hr worse under load (2002 D2, 110k). An easy fix, but they look OK until you remove it and flex to see the cracking hidden under the normal rubber compression.

    rear drive coupling

agree entirely with zzsteve! you need to take it off and have a good flex/feel of it and check closely for cracks.

As said before on here check your front drive shaft as well.
Not a bad idea to remove that as well for checking, not always that easy to check it in place.

If you go off road touring, have a lift and carry heavyish loads, I'd recommend replacing the rotoflex with a standard cardan joint. Its a standard replacement and the drive shaft costs about $500. I've had two fail in 100k km, the second catastrophically in the middle of the Simpson. Having a replacement didn't do me any good as the mounting flanges were buggered when it failed. I've since replaced with the cardan joint with no noticeble impact.
