    Disco 2 classic 2004 Td5 any issues

    Hi,

On my second Discovery 1, had the V8 for 10 years with no major dramas, swapped for a diesel to save on fuel. I'm now into my 4th year in a rebuilt Tdi with lpg. I have done 100k plus since the rebuild without an issue. Although she starts like a dream and runs well she who must be obeyed wants an auto and Disco number 2 is a manual.

Anyway I have found what looks like a nice 04 Td5 classic. She looks good, is a little exxy but I'm prepared to pay a bit over the odds for a lowish mileage well maintained one.

I'd really appreciate the expertise on here to advise if there are there any gotchas I should be aware of, I'm getting it RACV inspected and it comes with FSH and looks immaculate.

    Thanks heaps in advance.

    Regards

    Martin

    Hi,

I have a 2003 D2a TD5 auto, so pretty much the same vehicle. It has done 136K and we've had it for a bit over 4 years.

The things I've had to do are as follows:

    Replaced starter motor
Put in double cardon joints (preventative)
2 x fuel blocks (pressure regulator)
    Replaced engine mounts (last service)
    Central locking actuator
Replaced leaking plastic radiator bleeding bung with a brass one.

    Things that are being watched:
3 amigos (common problem with plenty of information on this site)
Leak from transmission (apparently common and caused from groove or elongation of housing around tranfer case main shaft - to fix properly/prevent happening again, estimate $1800)

That's all I can think of for now. If i recall anything else I'll post it up.

For those of you in the know feel free to correct my explanation of things.

    Hope that helps.

    Hello,

I have a 2004 D2a TD5 which was purchased only about 5 months ago. It's a Classic Town and had 83,000km on it when I picked it up. It's now sitting around 94,000km and it's been a perfect car. I've had absolutely zero problems with it and touch wood, nothing's gone bang yet.

I have however done a few mods to it including ARB front locker, 2" raised suspension, Safari snorkel, ARB side steps, ARB Sahara bull bar, front & rear diff guards, new Terrafirma steering damper, roof racks & awning.

As a preventative thing, I've also put a new Rotoflex in but that's about it. It's never skipped a beat and the only majopr service I have had to do is the factory 90k service. In saying that, I'm about to do a 5k oil & oil filter change before the next major service.

I think as long as you look after and maintain it properly, you won't have any problems with them. I love my TD5 and the 2004 is the last of the D2's so most of the problems have been rectified by LR already.

Good luck with the TD5! They are awesome trucks!

    Cheers,

    Ernie.

    Hi Martin.

    I have an 02(feb) build 2004 Td5 Auto Classic .... It's been a brillaint vehicle!

Had it for 3yrs now, bought at 120k, up to 163k .... failures account for 1 x top radiator hose (partially my fault with the bleed screw ... but they (screw) do fail, and a PS reservior to PS pump supply hose .... rubbed through on sump). Both simple driveway home repairs.

Apart from regular services & upgrades, these are my only two failurs in 43k ....

The late facelift D2a Classics are the pick of the D2 series .... Just ask Stevo68

I thought it was fairly obvious Kev was saying 02/2004 or Feb 2004.
