    Yes.

This is from a LR NA doc that Mturri posted to the forum last year:

    TORQUE CONVERTER LOCK UP

At vehicle pull away and during gear changes, the torque converter will allow a certain amount of slip to occur between the crankshaft drive plate and the input shaft of the gearbox. Incorporated into the design of the automatic transmission system used on Discovery Series II is a lock-up feature, where the TCM will activate the torque converter lock-up solenoid. Discovery Series II will lock the torque converter in all gears, whereas on pre 1999 Range Rover this can only be activated in third and fourth gears. When activated, the torque converter lock-up clutch will be engaged and no slip will be allowed. Direct drive through the torque converter will be provided in this condition.
Reading back on the forum there is differences between the V8 and Td5 in terms of lock-up speeds. The Td5 locks up at 80kph in 4th, and 70kph in 3rd. The V8 will lock up at 60kph in 4th.

With that in mind the Muddy Oval graphic makes more sense as it relates to the V8 in high range, normal mode. 2nd seems to lock at 40-45kph with a throttle opening of 80-100 (not sure if that is percent), 1st will lock at around 20kph with a throttle opening of 80-100.

I'll have a play with the Td5 and see if I can get the TC to lock in lower gears.

    cheers
    Paul

My D2a 2003 TD5 definitely locks up in all gears. Generally at close to wide open throttle when pulling away up steep climbs.

Thanks for the confirmation That does seem to be the sort of conditions the lock-up in 1 and 2 is designed for.

Ok,, I'll ask a different question,,
has anyone ever had 1st or 2nd unlock?

with the van on its easy enough to unlock 3rd,,
but sometimes I have to select 2nd and it locks up instantly, and same again down to first. (mind you this is a good thing when towing)

The chart on muddy oval indicates that 1st & 2nd will unlock once the road speed drops below a specific point, roughly 15kph in first and 30kph in 2nd.

Ok so it's been a while

I have out a sports chip in her which makes towing a hell of a lot easier. Selecting gears works a charm as well

Next project is going to be fitting a reverse/camping light to the back wheel holder somehow. I have seen a couple threads but I need to see pictures to see what I need to do.

Any ideas would be a great help cheers.
