D2 Front Receiver and ARB winch bar Discussion

I'm not sure if this belongs here or in the mods section (and I may be mad), but I'm still thinking about fitting a central front receiver point for a number of reasons.

I have an ARB winch bar and currently 2 of the 4x4DE underslung front recovery points, but instead of fitting a winch am exploring the option of a short and recessed receiver point behind where the winch would otherwise be (I think by keeping it short for normal operation this overcomes any issues with airbags?). Then I can then fit an extension section as required (the extension could then finish just behind the winch rope access hole) for those occasions when a front receiver would be handy, (including then fitting a winch fitted onto the Tigerz11 winch cradle that connects to a receiver).

That way, I need only carry a winch (and receiver extension) when it/they might be needed, and can then also keep the winch stored centrally inside rather than hanging off the front (or rear). Obviously I would also need dual front and rear winch cable connectors, but I don't see that as a major issue.

Another advantage is that the new cross member for the receiver (which I'm assuming at the moment would be bolted on where the bull bar connects to the chassis just behind the "flared?" section of the chassis rails) could also act as a steering arm guard.

    Am I mad?

Sounds like a reasonable idea to me. If you wander over to the P38a section, there's a member who has made one already.

    (1) The cradle hanging off the front WILL get you stuck

    (2) Once you're stuck, its odds on you wont be able to get to the receiver to fit the winch..

    (3) In 20+ years of off roading I've been winched backwards ONCE... But winched forwards over 50 times...

    Many thanks - good feedback

Re points 1 & 2 - the idea is that

    (i) the front receiver will NOT extend beyond the bullbar and willbe at winch rope height (remembering that the winch cradle has a bar extension that slots into the receiver); and

(ii) I plan not to drag the winch out of the back storage until it is needed,

and yes it is possible at that point the receiver may be under water/mud, but that's a risk I'm prepared to take, given that I'm not into extreme driving [its more of a recovery option for them other makes!!!!] GRIN. I'm now off to look at the site advised by Scouse (many thanks again)
