There is no need to remove the wood panel, in fact it's completely pointless. The screws/bolts holding the console in place are under the front edge of the range/cdl lever boot and in the bottom of the console box.

    See RAVE 76.25.01

And don't forget the SRD500070 ECU upgrade which gives you the final and best version of the ETC/ABS programming which is optimised for engaged CDL
Now you have my attention. Could you fill me in on this upgrade, what is involved for a 1999 disco 2 ?

Likewise, although i'm trying to avoid anything that bumps up the insurance premiums.
It's bad enough as is being an 18 yo male driver with a vehicle with "turbo" in the description

Good read if thinking of CDL for Disco 2.

    Cheers Liam.

There is one of my lever kits in Australia now, and I,m just waiting to see what sort of costs are involved in shipping the old lever back.

The whole kit, inclucing the correct knob, later style sticker and postage works out about £261.50. ( $398.00 ). The trouble is, I need the old levers back to convert, so a return postage fee has to be considered. I,m hoping its going to be about £19.00, ( $ 29.00 ).

I am looking into making a kit of parts that can be fitted to/in place off, the standard lever, but, ironically, this may work out more expensive than having a current lever AND the cost of return postage, PLUS, people who bought the kit, would have to carry out the modification themselves.

I really do wish I could knock these modified levers out for peanuts, but the fact is, they take a long time to do, and contain some expensive components.

    Just to add.

I think the CDL is one of the best mods you can do on the D2, and if you already have the right transfer box, then fitting a lever is the easy bit, however you go about it !!.

    Cheers.

It's not a performance mod per se, as LR recommend the part as a fix for specific Three Amigo's issues. The SRD500070 is simply the final revision of the SLABS ECU which was fitted as standard to the 2004MY D2's.

The main advantages are that it contains revised programming for locked cdl, improved ETC programming, improved ABS programming which among other things gives slightly better pedal feel, and improved tolerance of low ABS sensor output which solves one common cause of the Three Amigos. You also get the D2a ABS self check chimes if you wait until the check lights have gone out

I've been really happy with the upgrade, and find the ETC only rarely kicks in, even on deep sandy tracks up in the Victorian Mallee. I don't play on beaches so I can't comment on how the ETC behaves in that type of condition.

    cheers
    Paul

Paul, does that mean that the early type SLABS has a more aggressive ETC that may be better for offroading even with CDL?

I was wondering if it was better to swap to the later SLABS computer or just snip the CDL wire where it enters the SLABS for what is a similar end result for the CDL activation. But, this method doesn't reduce the sensitivity to low readings on the ABS sensors.

I think it is slightly less aggressive with the cdl locked. The wabco docs indicate that for slippery conditions slightly more slip is beneficial, and im guessing this is what LR have implemented. I know oz scott has mentioned that rock crawling seems to benefit from the more aggressive etc you get with the wire cut, but for all round use I reckon the ecu upgrade is the way to go.

I have some concerns about the way the wire cut plus cdl engaged effect the abs, but that is from an experience I had soon after doing the wire cut mod. Let's just say abs kicking in on a steep downhill hairpin is not my idea of fun. I suspect transmission wind up messed with the system and set off the abs mid-corner. I can't conclusively blame the wire cut but I haven't experienced the abs kicking in in the same way since I upgraded the ecu.
