If you're looking for a couple of days R&R after the Simpson you'll probably find Dalhousie Springs like Rosebud at Christmas time. A good alternative, after the obligatory dip in the Spring is Eringa Waterhole, beautiful spot, plenty of shade and not as nearly as crowded as Dalhousie Springs will be.

    Canning fuel figures

Can't comment on the Simpson, as its still on the "to do" list, but last time I did the Canning Stock route (yes I have done it more than once) in 2000, my 300tdi Defender used 10.4 l/100km, (2200km, 235L diesel, 11 days with 2 rest days) which is less than I used on-road!!
This was going north to south, which makes the dunes much easier, but I wasn't in a hurry, mostly coasting along in 3rd at just over idle.
For this trip I based my fuel figures on my first trip from south to north in a Niva, which took 18 days & I used 370L petrol. So I left Halls Creek with 220 L on board & 1 empty jerry can, & picked up another 200L at the Well 23 fuel drop.
If I did it again, I'd forgo the fuel drop & fuel up at the Kunawarritji community near well 33 (IIRC) diesel only unless you make special arrangements.

I did the Simpson, west to east, in 2009. Similar outcome to others above. I have a 130L replacement fuel tank and used 105L and achieved 16L/100km. Carried a 20L plastic gerry can but didn't need the fuel.

Also, to me, Chambers Pillar is a must see. Great little camping area and an impressive pillar.
