Coolant issues after Head Gasket replacement

    Just completed the Head gasket replacement on the Disco 2 (V8) and have some concerns with the Coolant system that some of you may be able to shed some light on..... After over-heating the motor and blowing head gasket due to a split heater hose I have done the following;
1: Stripped heads off motor and had them machined and the combustion chambers vacuum tested - All ok
2: Checked flatness of deck with straightedge, feeler gauges and light - All good
3: Installed new "Elring" Head Gaskets and tightened as per "Rave" procedure with new stretch bolts - All good
4: Installed new thermostat and replacement expansion tank (tank had a split in the 8mm inlet manifold return hose nipple) - All good
5: Primed and bled coolant system with new (Nulon -OAT) coolant - All good

NOW, temperature holds fine and steady at 1/2 way, I have no external leaks but the following symptoms:
1: Aggresive turbulant agitation in the expansion tank from the 8mm manifold return hose
    2: Still using coolant
3: Motor runs rough at idle for first 30 secs of running and then smoothes out (with the occasional slight "miss - hiccup"
4: Coolant system seems to be very pressurised and even maintains some pressure after sitting cold overnight (coolant level will rise approx 10mm in expansion tank whe pressure released)

What have I done wrong or missed, words of wisdom from those in the know would be great. I need to know if i'm possibly up for more repairs. I want to start towing our caravan for weekends away but don't feel confident

Hi Stimpy, you seemed to have done the work on the head, but did you check the block and made sure the liners didn't slip or have cracks?
for it to pressurize there must be combustion gases leaking into the water gallery at the block ends.

in terms of your spanner swinging nothing. I suspect your diagnostics may have let you down and your problem is a slipping liner not a done head or gasket.

Thanks for the replies Guy's, you're both correct in saying that I did not check the liners, visually there did not appear to be any evidence of movement, all liners were flush with the block deck and there was no evidence of indentation impact in the heads or the gaskets. The gasket on the drivers side was definitely failed between the water jacket and the rear cylinder. If I knew how to upload a photo I would post up some pic's.

How much coolant are you loosing each time the car has been at running temp? How much are you driving it each time you use it? Any smoke from it or water in the oil?

Are there any traces of a leak from underneath or around the rad? Small drips can dry on the hot engine before they hit the floor.

Check the following area;'s (when cold of course! as firstly not to hurt yourself and mostly because leaks drip when the engine is cold and not expanded)

    Welch Plugs for wetness

    WaterPump Gasket and bottom hose.

Top hose into the manifold, shine a torch and make sure the Valley Gasket is dry front and rear.

Throttle body, can drip and burn on the engine.

Are you getting a strong coolant smell and is the heater matrix working OK?
