Thread: Another bolt question.

Metric coarse will probably need to come from a supplier rather than bunnings. What grade are the bunnings bolts though? 5,8,10,12?

Thanks for the quick reply. I couldn't even find what grade the bunnings bolts were. I took in one of the bolts I needed and didn't find anything even comparable thread wise. The one I was actually sent is the closest one I've seen but is still too coarse. Maybe just go with LR? The bolts are on the rear diff so I assume LR will be able to supply... At a price.

Head into Adtrans trucks in Laverton.They are in Boundary rd and back onto the ring road and easy to get to. Most of the euro trucks such as Iveco are metric and they stock plenty of metric flanged head bolts and nuts in 1.25 and 1.5 in grade 8.8 or 10. Bonus as the are coated as well to prevent rust.

Grade 5,8 are imperial. ISO metric bolts run two numbers, like 6.4, 8.8, 10.9 etc.
Multiply the two numbers together, add a "0" and that is minimum yield strength (grade 6.4 is 240MPa yield). Breaking load is the last number in hundreds (6.4 is 400 MPa minimum breaking in tension).
Grade 8.8 (640MPa yeild, 800 MPa minimum tensile stress) is where the old "Hi Tensile" bolts start.
Going higher is not always better, unless you need the clamp load and tighten to a higher torque, there's no benefit. Some applications use the bolts as the fuse, higher strength bolts can make other (more expensive) bits break first.

M10x1.5 is standard metric coars which should be available anywhere. It's the most common M10 thread.
M10x1.25 is metric fine and not as easy to find. Japanese cars use it a lot.

Japanese bolts are different again, they run single digits for the code and run different head sizes to ISO metric bolts. Japanese bolts with the smaller shank and smaller head are a lot lighter, it adds up over a whole vehicle worth.

Look for a local bearing supply.

Most of them carry bolts, seals,loctite, ect..

Get yourself one of those cheap plastic vernier calipers that read in fractions and millimetres, and some screw pitch gauges in US and Metric pitches. Most decent bolt shops carry a range of inch and metric sizes.

Some metric diameters have as many as five pitches in reasonably common use. This is the vaunted ISO system that was going to eliminate thread confusion. The pigs are flying nicely.


If you need taps and dies in other than standard sizes, then many suppliers will tell you they either "don't exist" or "not available". Most of their staff were not born when BSF, BSC, and BSCon were last in common use, let alone CEI Coarse and Admiralty Fine.
