It's possible but I don't think it would get worse as he described it.

well hoping to get round to this job this coming weekend, so plan to pull the belt off and check all the pulleys for any grinding noise/feeling. My only question is, do i purchase replacement pulleys with bearings or am i better off getting a bearing shop to press a new bearing into the pulley? has anyone done this before? almost certain its the air condition compressor pulley now.

If its the compressor pulley bearing it will be quiet when the compressor is running and engaged. Does the noise stop when ac is running?

Never gets old (perhaps stale, but never old)

no the noise doesnt stop at all, regardless of whats on. Basically matches the revs of the engine. it just sounded like thats where the noise was coming from and feels rather 'grindy' as such when you feel the housing close to the pulley. maybe thats just normal and ive got the wrong pulley?

I had a whine before the auto was rebuilt. Reduced some, the went some more when the power steer pump was replaced and I did the bearings in the ACE pump.

Replaced the idlers with custom alloy units with double bearings as well.

Ok well unless I can feel anything unusual in any of the other pulleys, Its looking likely that I'll replace the idler pulley aswell as new bearings for the ac compressor. Thanks for the feedback guys it has been muchly appreciated. Is the bearing in the pulley that drives the fan worth a look at aswell?

My '01 D2 TD5 (no ACE) has the same noise. I suspect it's the power steering pump as the noise is louder when cornering.

yep, although if its a manual and removing the serp belt didnt change it then it may also be the input bearing on the gearbox.
