If I remember right, and I may be wrong!, they were M8.
I had to run a tap through mine, when I fitted my guards as they were full of mud

Think they're bigger than M8, but depends on the age of the diff too possibly. Earlier may have UNF, later Metric. Some have none (if a different model case has been used).

I pulled one out of the rear housing to match up some bolts, easy enough to do, and you will know you have the correct thread size

And come to think of it they could have been M10?

M10 looks about right by head size under the car. If imperial it'll be 3/8" UNF(9.53mm).

interesting, its not m8 because the hole is bigger i tried a m10 bolt but wont go in(fraction to big) also the thread is finer, which makes me think 3/8 unf, but then i thought to my self surely not unf in an 04 disco

Take a bolt out of the dampener on the rear housing for a comparison, I know with mine no chance of getting the bolt in until I cleaned up the threads

Anything is possible, there's still imperial stuff. Just because it's new, fasteners haven't universally updated. Infact there's no real need for stuff to have metricised in terms of threads.
