Have you checked the harmonic balancer?
so recently my idler pully bearing completely seized up whilst i was on a short drive down the road from my house. got the car home, replaced the bearing, and refitted the original belt to get me through to the weekend. it was screeching/slipping a bit so i thought the belt may have been stretched slightly? replaced the belt desmorning and the brand new one still looks a little loose (and i am pretty certain its the right belt). Car runs really well but when i stop and turn the car off it makes a really loud clicking noise (for lack of a better descriptive word). any ideas what it might be?
once again thankful for the assistance this forum provides

Have you checked the harmonic balancer?
no i haven't yet, where abouts is the harmonic balancer and how would i check it?
thanks
It is the crank pully, right at the bottom of the motor.
Ther rubber cracks when ages and can flex excessvely, the bolt can also work loose which can cause problems to the crank.
I have heard that they can make a clicking noise when worn, worth a look
ok ill take the belt off and see if theres any 'play' in the pulley,a bit strange that it didnt happen with the previous belt though, could it be the tensioner pulley? from a quick search through the forum it does seem that harmonic balancer replacement occurs often as a result of an idler bearing seizing up!
ok so pulled the new belt off and checked the crankshaft pulley with the front of the pulley removed and theres about 3mm of 'play'. which could be responsible, so..
1) new belt is great whilst running but when you turn the car off a very loud clicking noise comes on
2) old belt is squeaky whilst running but loud clicking noise isnt there when car is turned off
so im thinking theres a bit of play in the crankshaft pulley which is definitely a lot worse with the new belt. the new belt actually seems larger although its a gates microvat serpentine belt 7pk1820. bought from repco, has anyone had any experience with these belts and if this is the right size?
The fact that it feels loose lends me to think your tensioner has lost its... tension..
thanks guys new belt tensioner is ordered and ringing around to confirm again if the belt is right. Just for a reference point, is 2mm of play in the crankshaft pulley alright with the front of the pulley removed? i followed alien's great tutorial for testing the harmonic balancer but can't judge how much movement he had in it before he replaced it
thanks
A word of warning---don't put it off till later: I've just been through a horror story---if you let that harmonic balancer stuff up and you need the car on the road in ahurry it will cost you $1000++++ .I got mine from England and it still cost me 600 plus tools I had to make and buy. I've also just noticed that I will have to replace the tensioner purchased on Ebay for 125 as I don't want more trouble, cheeper from UK 45+17 freight. My new belt is slipping a little so I took a look and it is pulsing at idle. Anyway --BEST OF LUCK--![]()
