What is a reasonable weight to tow on the beach?

I'm in the market to upgrade my camper trailer to a caravan & just wondering what weight I could reasonably expect to tow on the beach with my D2 TD5. I suppose the critical part would be getting off the beach or into camp sites through the soft sand generally found in these areas. Also, would a single or twin axle be easier to tow on the beach? I currently tow your average semi off road box trailer with tent attached without too much problem.

I am running 245/70 Cooper STs & my ECU is chipped. Beaches where I tow include Fraser, Noosa, Bribie Island & Straddie.

You got a CDL??? With that the capacility dramatically increases, also depends on equipment and your driving ability.

Dual acle will creat more floatation, and also more drag.... not sure what the best option would be on that front, dpeends ont he weight of the van i suppose.

    Cheers

I wouldn't tow a dual axle in soft sand, if you need to turn you're tram tracking. Single axle, baggy tyres, about 500kg would be my willing maximum. It should match the vehicle track and have less ground pressure than your vehicle so it just rolls happily in your ruts most of the time.

If you have tire press set properly, and remember, not as low as for D2 on its own!, wide tires on trailer, also deflated to low, and given that sand is always changing ,wet, damp , dry , windblown, etc I would not go over the unbraked trailer load of 750 kg max. Less is always good, like do you REALLY need that blacksmith anvil? and the triple bowl kitchen sink?

A mate has just returned from Teewah towing a 17' single axle van with a 3.5 petrol rodeo.
    No problems he said.

Obviously on and off the beach/ferry will be the concern, just pick your fights and weigh up the risks before attempting the improbable!

You see plenty of vans at Little Freshwater and they tow and launch some big boats on Fraser.
Pick your tide times and tracks carefully and use common sense.

Very good depending on where you are looking from of course.

I was thinking of 14 to 16 foot size. I have added my own brand of CDL & run my tyres at 10-20psi on the beach with the camper trailer at 10psi. With the trailer at 10psi, the footprint length of the trailer tyre is the same as that on the Disco at 20psi.

Thanks for all the replies. I was hoping to see numbers around 1200 to 1500 kg being towed because I will be taking the kitchen sink along.

I have towed a tonn and a litte more many times in soft dry sand at Straddie . Can do it finer without CDL but with CDL easier. I have stopped half way up a cutting and dropped the types down to 15pi and just driven out with the loaded trailer. Cheers

Ps I have towed a 2 tonn dual axle road van with road tyres to Straddie and while I was able to tow it in and out of Flinders it's not relaxing. Cheers
