Not too sure where the D2 damper is but if you fit a HD track rod to a D1 or RRC, then you will more than likely relocate the damper to the steering (front) rod to get t out of harms way.

the Bearmach ones I got are solid not hollow. they are drilled and thread tapped each end. The theory I believe is that because they do not flex like the originals there is no harmonic vibration and no need for a damper. Having said that, a damper was originally designed to help with kick back when hitting potholes, etc. I tried it for a few days around Sydney, bad roads, and then put the damper on. I must say I didn't notice any difference. I did notice a big improvement going from the original standard hollow tube with damper to the new ones without. I figured that a damper is better to have than to not have. My damper is a Tough Dog RTC with the additional coil spring around it. Very relaxed over long stretches of heavy corrugations i must say.
Hi, where are people buying there steering guards from and what sort of price are they. My searches keep leading me know where.
Hi David,
I'm looking myself but haven't made the purchase yet as I'm also looking for a bull bar. I'm pretty sure you can get them from rovacraft but I'm not sure at what price, and they are generally on ebay for $250 + shipping. The one I'm looking at tho is here for $190 + shipping:
4x4 Design and Engineering - Landrover Discovery 2
Regards the recovery points, these are cheaper but not sure about compatibility. Not sure if they also make a steering guard for the D2 as I haven't gotten around to ringing them:
Custom Fabrications - Outcast Offroad
Let me know how you go...
Thanks,
I just fitted one of the ones from Ebay last week. I got it cheaper as it was sent to the wrong place so there passed it on at a lower price. Fitted up ok so will see how it holds up over time.
I went for the 4X4DE steering guard plus QT Services Diff Guards.....Great service from both companies.
Seems to be some confusion or people being mis-informed about the damper, it's there to reduce the deflection of the steering when driving on rough terrain, it should be fitted at all times, heavy duty rods or not.
I personally think the heavy duty rods are still to vunerable because of where they are, seen those bent as well on vehicles without a steering guard which is why I would fit one of those instead of heavy duty rods.
If you do buy a steering guard, then dont waste your money on any that dont have a frame behind the plate, there is far to many "cheap" designs out there which tbh are far to easily bent on the first trip and can actually "jam" the steering when they do get bent.
