    hissing sound

hey guys, I cant track down a hissing noise like air escaping, it only comes on when engine is going up from 1000 rpm to about 1200 then stops and seems to come from exhaust manifold side, doesnt do it at any other rev range, I can make it do it anytime if I gradually increase revs, its driving me mad, if it was turbo should I not feel a lack of power, if its manifold gasket would it not hiss all the time

    cheers

I've heard that noise in that rpm range, and then I've popped the bonnet and listened, and the noise seems to continue above the 1200rpm range, it's just hidden by other noises with the bonnet down.
I still don't know what it is, but I've replaced the intercooler hoses recently, so it might be something else.

The other thing to look for, is a warped exhaust manifold.

Although, it is usually reported as a whistle, it could hiss, I guess.

On mine, the stud at the back, closest to the turbo, broke.

Its a known problem, and an easy fix.

Just check & see if any of the nuts on the exhaust manifold are loose or missing.

On the intercooler, drivers side which has the black plastic tank.
where the intercooler hose connects, don't push the hose on to far, if you have a look with the hose off, you will see 2 ridges either side of the outlet, probably to strengthen the plastic outlet.
you only need to push the hose on till its flush with those ridges and clamp tight.
If you push the hose till it's flush with the intercooler it goes over those ridges and will not seal.
Best to look with a torch, not much room in there.
    Well worth a look!
