If you are sticking to R16 you have to go the ATR, I did and am equally impressed as the AT although they are definitely not a mud tyre.

That's odd, I recently put my ATRs through a good 200m of thick sticky mud and they were fine.

X2 on the Pirelli Scorpions, I've got them in 245/70/16 and they fill the guards nicely at stock height, although my lift makes them look a tad small :angel:
Fantastic grip in gravel, mud (My experience only, others say differently) and even my crazy driving doing slalom practice in the wet couldn't dislodge them.
I paid $265 a corner for mine, except when I went back to get only one which put them up to over $400 :eek:

Gday, we had MickeyT ATR's and towed a 2.5t van, we did around 85000klms with the tyres and and a quite a bit of offroad in that, some with the van. When they got down they got quite noisey on the highway and just replaced them with Cooper HTs, these we are also very impressed with and nice and quiet.

Hi We just replaced our 235/70 r16 BFG a/terrain tyres with the new BFG rugged terrain. these are a 80/20 highway tyre. they are quiet and look good too. we recently went up the oodnadata track and did 4k and they were an excellant ride. I would note that the D2 has a tyre rating for 925 kg and the BFG tyres are rated at 900kg and 44 PSI max pressure. the standard tyres have a slightly higher load rating and can be inflated higher. We tow a heavy load and go off road too and the tyres are working out well.
We bought 5 online from the tirerack.com and even with delivery they were around $190 each. i took them to a local tyre fitter and they stripped and fitted the new ones , with balance for $50 the lot and took the old cases. When i priced them locally they wanted $295 each. so it may pay to check online. The tirrack were really efficient it took 6 days in total delivered to my door, and they did all the paperwork, too easy.

Wow, thanks for the replies everyone - tyres are a confusing minefield, especially when you don't know what to look for! My last car was a Nissan Pulsar so I didn't have much useful experience there.

I ended up going with some Bridgestone Dueler 694s in the 245/70/16RLT. I can't believe the difference in the car compared to my old ones - quieter, smoother, better fuel economy, better acceleration, and it felt much more sturdy when towing the float today (probably due to the redued vibrations!).
I was really hoping to get some Pirelli's but they were just too out of my price range at the moment - next time! (post-graduation haha!)
