Rubber 'donut' around TD5 oil filler

This maybe a dumb question, but what is purpose of the rubber 'donut' around the oil filler on a TD5?

For the life of me I cannot see a purpose for it, but I am always willing to be enlightened by the 'intelligencia' on this forum

    Cheers

When the accoustic cover is on it seals it to the rocker cover and will help prevent numpties that spill oil on refilling going under the cover. I reckon it would just direct the oil to go everywhere. I did away with both with no detriment. Now if I do spill oil it catches in the channel, better idea I think.

Well Strangy, hopefully the pic will be there when I post this. It is the black rubber under the oil filler cap.

jf1056, Hmmm.... it seems strange and although I am careful when adding oil, I still have oil on the inside of the acoustic cover - not sure how it is getting there.

Its supposed to stop you from spilling oil down the filler boss under the acoustic cover where it soaks into the foam and proceeds to eventually catch fire.

The correct solution is to turf the acoustic cover completely.

Hey Blknight, you really know how to scare a guy The foam under the acoustic cover already has a fair amount of oil in it. I guess it is time to remove the foam and at least wash it in fire retardant!

I know you say to ditch the acoustic cover, but it does 'seem' quieter with it in place.

Just turf it, after a week you wont notice the difference.

    From my stand point

The overall sound level only changes a couple of DB but it attenuates the higher frequency stuff. Typically changes in the higher frequency stuff is the first warning sign of something going wrong. It also obstructs vision of some seals.

    summating

It prevents early detection of some leaks
It can mask the early symptoms of a fault
It gives you a potential method of setting fire to your vehicle

clean it or turf it, your call.
