G'day all
I am looking at buying a D2 (thought of D3, see my other post) but decided (mostly) on a 2003/4 D2 TD5 (of course) and auto.
Got lots of advise from searching this forum on what to look for but need a little advice on the spec level and pre-purchase inspections.
Currently there some I like one with and one without ACE. What are the benefits/issues of ACE?
Any suggestions who to contact in Sydney / Central coast to conduct an unbiased pre-purchase inspection? I don't mind paying for a good mechanic for the work as long as it gives me (some) piece of mind especially for private sales. I don't like stealers and they tend to mask a lot of issues...

Go for ACE.
Been in one with and one without. Big difference in body roll. Passengers don't need to plant their hands on the ceiling........as much, or pull the dash out when hitting round-a-bouts.

Trying to arrange a test drive: 2003 with ACE, bulbar, electric trailer brakes, side steps, BFG All terrains on alloys, CB, 155K km, dual batteries as well ... looks good on paper and in the budget.
There is another one similar kms but no ACE which I'll look at as well. Kinde steering towards the ACE model as it seems to be set up nicely bar a snorkel.
Test-drove and had a gook sticky-beak around a nice D2:
2003 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 03MY TD5 with ACE bull-bar, dual batteries (professionally fitted), side steps, CB and antenna and electric trailer brake controller (also done by a professional mechanic). Full service history, immaculate inside, no signs of off-loading on the underbelly, has been driven on outback roads but nothing extreme or 'adventurous'. Although set up for towing caravans only towed one a couple of times only. BGF AT with good tread (80% or so). Good unit and the transfer case has a CLD
Only small issues are headlining wrinkled around the C pillar on one side, cracked bottom rear light cover. The rear door has a bit of a ripple from a badly fixed dent due to a horse's behind. Other than that looks fine.
Gonna get a pre-purchase inspection anyway.
Fingers crossed all's gonna go well and I will be a proud new owner of a neat D2.
Sounds neat truck with plenty of extra's. The BFG A/T's are very quiet on the road too, i'm very impressed.
As for the wrinkled headlining, that on of two things 1) A DIY which did not go 100% well so could be cosmetic only 2) It will start getting worst and need replacing. DIY job (no sunroofs) $200 see my thread. If you cant be bothered DIY then up to $1000.

I need a mechanic in the Gosford area - the current owner doesn't want the D2 to leave the Coastso Brookvale is out of the question at this stage. Anyone know a good mech in Gosford area?
The big plus is the family likes it and truth be told they like it better than the D3
Some questions for anyone didn't read the manual yet ;-)
1. when in 1 or 2 or 3 there is a green light with a trailer that comes up on the dash. Is that normal or is it only due to the fact that electric brake controller is fitted?
2. the auto has a "mode" switch - what are the modes?

I was looking at this car's ad online last night too...
1. The trailer light on the dash illuminates when using the indicators and a trailer is connected (generally). Extra load is detected on the circuit (trailer lights) and triggers this light to tell you the trailer's electrics are connected. Indicators on a bullbar (as fitted in pic) also place a similar load on the circuit if not LEDs and will illuminate when indicating.
2. In the Auto, the Mode button provides an S - Sport mode and M - Manual mode. In S mode, the up change point in the gearbox is extended (holds onto gear a little longer) to give more response and better acceleration.
When low range is selected, the M mode comes available. When selected, the gear the auto is in will be held. Select 2 with gear selector, press Mode so M illiumates on dash, Disco will proceed in 2nd gear. Particularly good if you wish to lock into a particular gear ascending or descending a hill.

Hmmm that trailer light doesn't sound quite right. It should illuminate on start up as a check and then only when a trailer is attached and the indicators are in use. It certainly doesn't light up on my D2 when any of the lower gears are selected. Perhaps there is something adrift with the brake controller wiring? Add it to the list for the prepurchase inspection.
The mode switch selects either S (sport) in high range or M (manual) in low range. In sport mode the shift pattern is changed for sportier performance. In manual mode you have to use the shifter to change gear with D being 4th.
I wouldn't be concerned with the headlining, everyone I looked at when I was buying earlier in the year had some sort of sag there. I'd be more concerned with the rear door and checking that it is properly aligned.
Any way good luck with it all. From the pics it looks a reasonable car.
