    Disco 2 touring

    Hi all,

I am planning to drive part of the Savannah Way in 2013 in my automatic disco 2 td5. I have just ticked over 200,000 reliable kms. Can any one recommend some preventative maintenance items to check off during the next 6 months before I go?

Are there any particular spares that should be carried for a 4 week trip?

    Thanks, NIck

Which part? We did Borroloola - Wollogorang - Hells Gate - Doomadgee - Burketown without any problems. A side trip into Lawn Hill NP and Kingfisher Camp (on Bowthorn Stn) is well recommended. As far as bits are concerned, there are a few references already posted - just do a search for keywords.

Rough and badly corrugated in spots; take care with a couple of the water crossings.

    Have a great trip.

I'd recommend two tyres (spares haha), preferably both on rims, if not carry an extra tyre as well as your spare. I bought a used tyre for the job, $65 for a cooper st. Add to that a tyre repair kit, they are very handy and can get you out of trouble. I would recommend replacing the security nuts on your rims (at least for the trip) with standard wheel nuts and have a 27mm socket and breaker bar to back up the LR tyre changing kit, as both the security nuts and LR brace are a bit suspect at times.

Have your car serviced and repairs done if noted- I'd pay attention to the double cardan joint on the front propshaft, check the uni joints are fine, and the condition of your cooling hoses. I'd check all other fluids too, I think at 200k you're probably up for it anyway.

I'm assuming you'll have basic kit like an air compressor, shackles, snatch strap, shovel...

Add a roll of 'rescue tape' (silicone self amalgamating stuff) for hoses, carry spare fluids and a toolkit with sockets/spanners from 10 through 27mm.

Check your jack is ok too. You might think about replacing shocks if you're still on the originals at 200k, as much for the ride improvement as for reliability.

And enjoy, it's a great drive. I did it a few years ago and the road wasn't too bad, except for a stretch around Hell's Gate, that is aptly named. My D2 lapped it up and no dramas.

I'd carry a spare fuel filter, serpentine drive belt, fuses and a bit of engine oil and OAT Coolant for topping up. Optional items..... Crank angle sensor and a set of relays.

The Savannah Way is a nice drive but the flies were annoying!! I wouldn't be overly concerned about masses of spares, etc... but make sure that the car has a full service before heading off and anything that's looking worn, replace and then keep the old part as a spare.

There will be corrugations, so make sure that when loading, you've not got anything that will rattle and annoy the hell out of you.

If you're stopping off in Normanton, ISTR that the campsite was pretty decent and there's a good fish & chips in town.

We did the Boroloola and up section.

Make sure you spend time in the Limmen NP. It's little known and the Western Lost City should be a world heritage area - its the one that tour operators fly over from Cape Crawford, but you can drive in, in the dry season when the river crossing is down. You need to the a key to the gate from the ranger. Also visit Lorella Springs Station and camp at butterfly springs.

    Top tips:
120 rated 8 or 10 ply LT tyres (we did not take or need a second spare)
    Air compressor
Graphite powder / lock spray lube for rear door lock which will dust up on this trip.
    Spare air cleaner element.
    Spare fuel filter.

Let me know if you want more details on the Limmen NP.
    Cheers

Plenty of good advice in posts above.
The Savannah Way is not particularly difficult. Many river crossings, some could be deep depending on time of year.
I did it in August 2009, all the crossings were less than 300mm deep.
Beautiful country, D2 will do it happily with normal preparation.

    (1) Bilstein Shocks if you're getting new ones. My D2 with similar milage has been transformed by them.

    (2) Tyres with deep tread are more likely to prevent damage

    (3) Hawkeye / Nanocom - can you buy or borrow one? Better than getting stuck in some limp home mode.

    (4) Fanbelt & Filter Kit

    (5) New batteries in your keys, spare key, EKA code in your wallet

    (6) Workshop manual / RAVE on laptop

    (7) Fuses, Relays, Globes

    (8) New battery (if due for one)

    (9) a 2nd bottle jack is handy if a wheel comes off

    (10) is a long range tank an option, less chance to buy fuel in out of the way places. A fuel bladder may be a cheaper option and not as cumbersome as jerrycans.

    (11) gearbox filter & ATF change.

    (12) renew all gear oils and check uni joints.

    (13) if EAS - spare airbag

    (14) clean radiator (internal & external) before the trip and have new coolant.

    (15) low coolant alarm / head temp alarm

    (16) I like to treat the windscreen with RAINX before each trip, makes for a clearer view, easier cleaning, and if wipers fail, still makes it drivable.

    (17) Bug Off in the washer bottle
