Is the VNT actually larger than the standard turbo or does it just have the ability to change it's sizing to be more effective down low? Pretty sure the exhaust outlet on the VNT is the same size as the standard turbo, and there is often a quoted rule of exhaust size should be 10% larger than this - which 2.5" is.

Alive Tuning/TD5 Alive with their larger hybrid turbos still utilise a 2.5" exhaust system.


In saying, that, I'd be careful, as pretty sure Ian from Bell Auto Services that sells the Turbo Technics VNT for the TD5 has stated that they will only warranty the VNT with an exhaust up to 2.75" size.

Thanks to all for advice. I have the egr removal done and in time will do the exhaust changes.

The normal offerings from Turbo techincs are the stage 1 (s208-1) which I believe is pritty much the same size as the orignal turbo just vnt. Then the s208 which is slightly bigger then standard.

There is a custom hybrid turbo s220.

I have just got my s220 and it is much larger then the orignal. The s208s uses the orignal front housing. I spoke to TT in depth about the s220 and it uses a larger from housing and shaft from a t25 that was in a BMW I believe.

Having owned the s208 before the stage 3 has a little bit more lag but has a lot more punch up top. They are designed for a 3' exhuast and are good for 1.8-2.0 bar of boost.

Is it still better than the OE turbo from idle through to full boost though ?

Its been a long time since I have driven a OE turbo on a td5.

But yes spools up at low rpm faster then stock but is very violent in its power delivery from about 10psi upwards and not really suited to off road use the s208 is better.
