    tyre sizes & gearing

I have a td5 auto (no chip) with a 2" lift. I want to up the tyre size from the standard 235/70 to either 245/75 or 265/75.
I use it for towing trailers for my business as well as daily driver, family wagon & off-road toy - it has to be all thing to all people.
My question is will the 265/75s make the gearing too high for towing a 2t trailer? I realise its a matter of opinion in many cases, but I don't want to go down the road of changing diff ratios or anything
    Cheers,
    Alex

ID suggest for your situation that a deefer Tcase would be the go, they only take about a day to swap over if you're lazy about it.

    Hi Alex

I run 265/75s with standard gearing. I find the td5 a bit sluggish and it works hard on hills when loaded up.....not with a 2 ton trailer even.

I have gas and this helps a huge amount with those issues.

If you don't want to re-gear, I strongly suggest you don't get 265/75s especially if you need to tow that weight.

I will be re-gearing and also doing considerable engine mods in the near future to make the bigger tyres much more suitable and usable.

I would suggest you see if you can borrow someone's wheels for a road test before buying, that way you can make your own mind up.

    Hope this helps mate.

    Cheers

Hey guys, on that issue, pardon my lack of knowledge and please correct me if I'm wrong, isn't the high range in that transfer the same, with low range being a bit lower, therefore there would be little advantage with towing on road?.... Yes much better off road though?

Might consider this myself for off road as well in any case.
    Cheers

All LT230's run the same low range ratio which is 3.32:1

Basically varies from 1.003 to 1.6:1 with the most common being 1.4 and 1.2:1 which are (most) Defenders and D2 respectively

.....so a 1.6 would effectively be a lower ratio to assist bigger wheels, have I got this right?

Yes. However they are rare in AU. You have a 1.21:1 case, so changing to a defender (1.4). is what you probably want.
