i have 2001 at 280km and going strong, how long are you thinking ahead, 500km seems possible with good care.

    Possible?
If you look after them well they should see close to double that.
Iffy bit is the trans, JC reckons the autos go at around 240kms on average, yet I'm smack in the middle of the "risk" period (200000-250000) but my box runs fine
Manual trans you could expect to see another 50k kms out of it, if looked after moderately.
The Td5 will last, you just need to look after them

MR auto here (LR specialists) use synthetic oil in the auto which will help it last longer.

Not meaning to hijack the thread - but I have a 2001 D2 auto too.
Mine threw a big-end bearing around 160,000km. I was a bit annoyed. Dealer put a used $8,000 90k engine back in for me - cheaper than a $12,000 new replacement he quoted. Repair, apparently was not an option.
I was a bit miffed to say the least.

Mine was hardly pushed, spent most of its time in surburbia. Only offroad really was one trip to Fraser Is. I can only assume, but cant prove of course that the lack of longevity goes back to a service where the dealer failed to reinstall the sump plug, and on squealing to a halt, had to be towed back.

My (related to thread) question is - What /IS/ the expected lifetime mileage of a TD5 engine?

the injectors are rated to about 1M K

I always had the gut feeling that they were a 500K between rebuilds motor. (assuming no major mechanical malady)

The lore of diesels getting a million clicks was from some varieties of understressed, naturally aspirated large capacity mechanical injection motors like some that Toyota and Nissan had. Modern small capacity high pressure electronic injection turbocharged motors are just not that sort of ownership proposition. The reports over many years on this and other sites should make that clear but it's not just LR its all other brands of modern tds as well.

    Cheers

I have 352,976 km's on my TD5. It is used mostly as a tourer, only a small amount off road [ duck ck rd., the back way to OReilly's was the last] Still pretty much stock standard, no chip, no lockers,[cdl only] and I do drive conservatively. Low coolant alarm, "welltempered" digital water temp moniter & alarm, and regular servicing, I attend to every water leak immediately, non-urgent oil leaks are just rust prevention until sorted.Very happy so far, hope that Irishman Murphy isn't listening, Bob
