    D2 TD5 COOLANT CONFUSION

I'm hoping someone can give me some guidance regarding the coolant for a 2000 D2 TD5. Only acquired recently with good service history (well the books is stamped and there are more recent service receipts and some major parts) and has 160k on it. Must not be too bad as the new Nanocom Evo only logged an 9.6 EGR open load I think it was. I figured that's because I pulled it out and cleaned it when I should have started on the other side at the collapsed intercooler inlet hose when it stopped a couple of weeks ago. Has green coolant in it. It has a leak on the oil cooler pipe connecting hose from what I can see around the turbo guard I am still to work out a way of undoing the centre M8 bolt on. I have topped up the expansion tank with a 50/50 of Nulon long life concentrate as I cant do the hose until the weekend and it is now the Wife's daily drive. I'm confused as I had a conversation this morning with a Land Rover shop who say they use Green but at more like a 1.5 TO 10L water ratio.
They say that the Green stuff finds leaks easier the higher the concentration?? Also I read conflicting things on some posts in AULRO some saying only use red, some saying it becomes polar and therefore more corrosive. I have ordered my Engine Saver but that isnt going to stop the wrong coolant screwing my perfectly good at this point engine. Any advise from seasoned D2 people would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers
    Grant

You've got a few things in front of you. Start by turfing the egr and cleaning the inlet manifold. If your not sure about which coolant is or has been in the engine flush it and fill it again. I recommend the nulon red oat (or any other oat) over the traditional green stuff. The hoses are a 100k km/5 year thing so if there's no history do them too.

Do you mean turfing the EGR?

I'm looking at at least blanking the exhaust manifold very soon. Is it really better to take it right out and get the pipe kit?

Will be going right over the coolant hoses on the weekend. I see these hoses as the easiest way of toasting a head in very short time if one lets go. As i said with the wife driving it she wont have a clue until it's too late.

Is it definately 50% concentrate 50% water. Should it be distilled water?

Think I better drop the sump and check the oil pump bolt too then. Ah, what did I do on weekends before Land Rover.

Sorry for all the questions but searching the forum threads brings more questions than answers half the time.

    Thanks

    TD5 coolant

Most use OAT red 50/50. Can buy it ready mixed to that,or can buy concentrate and break it down to 50/50.Use distilled or demineralised water.

I think it`s a good idea to change annually despite manufacturers claims.

    you may find this useful,
    I used LL Nulon Green,

In this thread it has e-mailed responses back & forth to Nulon,

Also a suggestion to earth your alloy Radiator!

If you are only topping up until you do the job don't waste your money on coolant. Just put water in it until it is fixed. Straight water for a short time will not do any harm, and as you still have coolant in the system in will just be a bit less concentrated.

    Thanks for the feedback people.

Roverv8 seems you investigated this a few years ago. So has the green been OK. I'm guessing it must be or you would have a bit more to add about failures since. I think I'll change all the hoses and run green.
Does seem like having to go back to red brings in a whole new varient in chemical flushing etc. Etc.
This rig had a water pump and then a rad and then a fuel block all within 6 months about 4years ago but only 20k km since so I'm wondering now what coolant it ran prior to that now. I dont think its actually ever been off road either and has been serviced by Land Rover stealer and then specialists.since 05 so I'll just hope they all did what they were supposed to in that time.

My recently purchased D2 Td5 with 145,000 km came with a full service history, but from an independent, not a LR stealer. I have been going to ring them to find out what coolant they have used. I will do this and report back my findings.

Try CAT ELC (extended life coolant) this is the same product source (Texaco) and same data sheet as the OE Havoline stuff - OAT... and it is orange/red as well.

About half the price of the Nulon one last time I checked 4 liters 50:50 pre-mix is about $19 and less if you buy the big container for a full change.
