Whining noise coming from the rear

half full as in tank 1/2 or is it just gauge 1/2? as the sendr unit is intergrated with the pump it is possible you have an earthing problem :) check the wiring. failing that it may be a new pump after all :D

I just had a look through some receipts that the previous owner gave me and the fuel pump was replaced in January earlier this year. $580 for the pump plus $90 labour. So I am assuming the pump is fine and from the price it looks like it would be a genuine LR pump right? Can it maybe be a blockage of some sort? In the workshop manual it says there is:
- a coarse filter
- a gauze filter
and
- a paper filter

between the fuel tank and the fuel pump. Does anyone know if these filter come with the pump and have hence been replaced?

The noise is definitely related to pressure. Sometimes when the tank is less than half full the wining noise continues even after I turn the engine off. If I open the petrol tank cap the noise goes away at the same time as the negative pressure is released.

Could it be a release valve that is blocked? Is this something I should worry about?

Aftermarket I think, pretty sure they are $800 or so genuine.

Edit: they are $350 genuine from the UK so the part in Oz would easily be $600.. There are a lot of alternatives and $200 profit on parts would not surprise me.

Trippy, The symptoms you describe are very hard to pin down from just a description. Things like that are very much a hands on see, um in the flesh thing as there are soo many variables. We could say , well yaeh its this and $500 later it reappears!! :( not good.
You need to find some1 to look at it with you and get thier ideas first hand too.

My V8 has been doing this for years. Everytime i'm getting below 1/4 tank.

Yes - Open the filler cap and let the pressure out.

Have you ever noticed that when you fill up from the reserve light the air that rushes as you undo the cap?... This pressure release stops the little horn noise...

I've been having this issue for about 2 years and thought I'd better get onto it. I posted another post earlier in the year with the same question but got little reply.

Could this be related to the fuel pressure release valve (situated between the filler cap and the tank, behind the body work)?

I can find no rhyme or reason to this other than if I bang the panel under the filler cap hard while its "buzzing", the noise stops!
Though it's gonna be a bugger to get to and replace tucked all up there....

If it is like an RRC and I think it is, the evaporative emissions valve in the engine bay is controlled by the ECU and only opens at part throttle while moving. the noise is air escaping from a very small leak somewhere in the evap system.
If you do a lot of idling the temperature in the tank will rise from the recirculated fuel and you will get that squealing noise.
You could check the evap valve on the carbon canister is working properly by bridging it but it probably is normal.
it is much worse in a 140l tank in the tropics.

But the pressure build up is normal and nothing to worry about, although I must admit I was paranoid about it at first.

I still have this occurring but I usually just undo the fuel cap to make it stop. I was thinking the other day that maybe there is a release valve in the actual fuel cap itself and that I would try to just replace the fuel cap. Does anyone know if there is a valve in the actual fuel cap?
